Hello everyone, I need advice on detectors suitable to detect when my cats use the kitty litter tray. Sounds a bit petty, but I'm amazed how much smell comes out of a 2Kg beastie. I want the detector to trigger a 240v fan installed in the wall near the tray. The room is a narrow utility room (1m x 3m), and the tray is at the far end from the door. The room has a window and clear plastic roof (in case the light conditions are relevant). Ideally the detector range would be limited to the immediate vicinity of the tray to prevent excessive false triggering as we use the door end of the room a lot. A time delay switch off is required, but this can be done by the fan uni…

Does anyone know how I can currently get qualified as an electrician? I phoned NICEIC for advice and they said to go to a tech college and take C&G 2360 Electrical Installation. I phoned my local college but they said they no longer did that course. The tutor said the course I needed depended on who I wanted to register with once qualified and that there was much confusion over Part P registration. Anyway, he suggested C&G 2330 for 12 months, then 16th edition and then a domestic installer sheme after that. I then looked on a website all about getting qualified and that suggested NVQ. Also, having not worked for an electrical contracting company (I'm an intrude…

Can anyone explain how I remove a zone from my Optima XM? I have tried disconecting the 2 wires going in to the control box from the appropriate zone but when I re-set the sytem it still has them going off. This is because I have a fault on a wire in that zone and am having to omit that zone everytime I set it until I can get to the wires under the floorboards. Thought this would be a short term fix to that.? Any help would be greatly appreicated

I just been perusing the new part p doc and it appears to say that if a diyer or an unqualified person ie without part p or sign off ability does the work then report it to building control then it is up to buiding control to get someone in to check the work but NOT at the customers expense. IF this is so why would any body or firm want to register for part p etc. If I have mis-read it please let me know and point out the error of my way. If I havent mis-read it there is going to be one hell of a lot of angry sparks who have paid to be in a great position to get the work legally and now just don't need it. It would also mean that building control would foot the bill for…

Hi everyone. Completely new on here and looking for a bit of advice. Sorry for the novel. I'm a time servered electrician but have been involved mainly in the mainainence side of things in an industrial environment for the past 25 odd years. everything from H.v. switching and carrying out preventative Maintenance of machinery, industrial installations ect. It's been a long long time since I done any domestic work and outside of my employment I only do other electrical work in my own home and very well aware of the safety side of things. I've just completed building a conservatory onto my house, I've layed 20mm steel tubing into the concrete base and installed 3 brass…

I am about to run some power to my from the house. I have used Armoured cable to be dug into the ground. The issue I have is what sort of distribution do you need at the shed end. I will be running a circuit breaker in the kitchen and taking the power off that to the shed. I just really wanted to know what the best form of protection will be needed in the shed. It is all watertight so no need for waterproof stuff. MAybe some sort of inline RCD going to 2 sockets? What would you do?

Hey All, Just found another forum site with this posted in the electrical section, What would you say to the Following Quote: Can I solder a ring main? i.e. I need to connect one 2.5mm mains cable to another in a very tight space. Is it OK for me to solder (and insulate) these cables rather than to use a screw-block? I was about to solder them when my builder told me "Jack, never solder mains cables. Mains cables get hot and the solder will mealt". I'm pretty sure this is incorrect. Solder mealts at about 190 degrees C. Something is VERY wrong if a ring main gets up to 190! Not to mention that the insulation will fail long before the solder. I'm a house owner, not an…

I've just installed my projector in bedroom, ran all my cables (10m) up the pole and across the attic and back down in my room to my desired location for input. As I have installed projectors for a living I know that normal practise is to have the sparkies install a single socket in the attic/ceiling void so the manafacturers 2m power cable can be used... In the rush to get my projector going I made a 10m lead of 3 core and stuck an IEC on one end and plug the other which runs the same way with the input/video cables. Im now thinking this is a **** idea, the projector is rated 3A. I have started noticing slight occasional interference (wavy lines) through certain inputs. …
