Hi all, Sorry all, I don't really know what to call this query; it's not 'setting up business' per sé, but is related... A national company approach you. They ask if you pay a fee to become an 'approved installer', you get little things such as Window/Van stickers, new uniform with your/their logo and all that, but you also would get paid to install all alarms on behalf of this company with a 30 mile radius of your base, as well as all alarm maintenance etc. All alarms and accessories are supplied. There are no restrictions on you continuing to fit your own alarms. Plus you benefit from their nation TV/radio advertising etc. So it's almost like a f…

Hiya, I'm new to this forum so treat me gently. Believe it or not I'm actually an apprentice for a very big fire & security company in UK based all over. I'll be qualified in July and hopefully start a fire and security company mid to end of his year. I've worked in the industry for nearly 5 years doing mainly fire but have installed dozens of intruder, cctv and access control. I'm after some advice on how to start up? What do I need etc such as tools, van. What's the best way of getting customers to start off with? Ads on websites, leaflets around estates? I don't want to be messed around with or lead off the subject, I'd like some proper advice if possible. …

Hi, I'm planning on taking a new step and hopefully running my own fire alarm company. Yes you might not agree that I'm just doing the one discipline but I've had 10 years experience within the fire industry, I've designed, sold, installed, commissioned and maintained systems. I'm all there with the job side of it. It's just getting the work, where would I start? Fire alarms isn't really a word of mouth is it. What ways of advertising do you use? I'm planning on doing my own work also being a subbie for a local well know f&s company. All I need to know is the running business side of things. How do I calculate budgets if I don't even know what I could earn t…

Guys Myself and my colleague are taking the plunge to go self employed and sub, we are looking at a rate of £350 P/D Honestly, is this a good rate? We don't want to charge too much and be greedy but same token not charge enough if the industry will pay more for quality time served engineers. Thanks in advance

Hi all, I know it's a common thread but Ive been with my current company for about six years now and am thinking of starting my own company, I don't really know where to go or who to speak to for business advice and also what I need personally to be "certified" I want to do things the right way because I see many people do it the other way. As an example I see people saying how they need to purchase documents etc? Some people are NSI or Sia. Please don't tear me to shreds people

Hi All I'm after a little advice here, i'm a fully qualifed security enigneer (Tavcom Diploma + manufacturer training) and been working in the industry for around 6 years now. I've installed & maintained multiple IP camera systems aswell as analogue systems including access control, intruder alarms with some door auto work for my current employer. I'm looking/exploring the idea to become a subby. I have my estate vehicle with roof racks for ladders etc, full tools, laptop, handyset etc.. Is there much demand for self emplyed engineers? I don't want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire as such lol. All advice appreciated.

Hi Everyone, Just wondering if you could help settle a debate we are having about racking within the vans. The racking to be used for storage of parts / general spares e.g. buttons, locks etc The vans currently seem so disorganised with bits and bobs in boxes. Fair to say that we don't have standard parts like BT would but still it seems to be highly inefficient to be searching through various cardboard boxes for the odd bit. Of course the downside is that they take up space so you may not be able to maximises the space. How do you stay organised and what works for you? Any suggestions welcome.

Hi All, Was just wondering if anyone knew the legalities relating to sending post to someone who is having work done that I know because of looking at the local planning permission on councils website. My old boss used to send very brief casual letters to people having work done. I just wanted to know whether this is allowed or would it be classed as illegal? Just looking for new ways to generate business.

I am trying to start up my own company initially just installing new wired and wireless intruder alarm systems. I have worked in the telecoms industry for 10 years so am used to running and concealing cables inside homes and businesses. I have installed my own alarm system and some for friends but that is it. I am trying to find out what the minimal qualifications if any I should get before starting to install systems into paying customers homes. Like I said I'm new to this so any help would be great Dan

Hi all, I am just wondering what people use for their day to day business software. I am looking at options now for a distribution side of business. Important to me are - Stock inventory and automatic stock control. Client account database Supplier account database Ability to set up discounts and net pricing for clients on items from the stock inventory. Quotes which are convertible to orders. Invoicing and prompting when payment is due. Paypal/Credit Card integration. Purchase orders All that amongst a million other features. I am hoping there is something cloud based out there on a monthly subscription and I am not a fan of Sage! Thanks…

Just thinking about paperwork and how simple it could be? Check list and value box's so the data is recorded? But how about the customer contract, just pondering best way, whether it should be just documented as to what they are having or to give them the option for extras at the end. thanks
