Queries about setting up in the Alarm business.

Dear All, I have recently been made aware of a very nice guarding contract that is coming up for grabs and I require some information. Im currently working in the Alarm & CCTV trade within the Midlands and we would like to setup a sister company whereby we can offer Security Gatehouse Guarding as a side line. Since this oppotunity has arisen I have been researching the costs & qualifications required to get this underway. Now if I was to setup a guarding company and simply register my self as a Non Front Line SIA operative (which I believe to be

We all have them, but what type of vehicle do you use for work, and what do you think are the benefit's / drawbacks? I have an Astra 1.7 Envoy estate, (livered up like an ice cream van!! )It's rather basic with no CD or Air Con (I've been spoiled in the past!) but does boast Power steering, electric windows, central locking, air bags and returns around 54 mpg without my ladders and 48mpg with. It does the job and although quite basic I benefit tax-wise

Hi all I am looking for some friendly advice please. I have worked in the manufacturing and distribution side of the industry for many years and after spending long hours helping the rest of the world out of security problems on and off site I have decided that over the next 2 years I will turn my skills to starting up on my own. I will be mainly concentrating on access control but I am also familiar with the ways of CCTV. My main question is one to bounce of all the people who started as a 1 man band. How did you go about setting up and being successful in balancing installation work with finding new business. I would start tomorrow if I had the answer to this so …

I am looking for the benefit of your experience please... How do I cover myself, in writing? Now, no jokes about permanent marker pen on skin etc! Basically, I want to play fair and ensure that the client does too. I want to get some sort of contract paperwork in place so that I don't get screwed over by clients who pick at things. Please don't say "Just walk away" because if the work's been done and the client is nit-picking or something, I would like it to be plain and clear where the line is drawn. Obviously I want to do a good job and fulfil my obligations. Sure, I would be happy to help but I don't want to get saddled with SEP (someone else's problems). For in…

i own a manned guarding company in the south yorkshire area, and as a result of the huge jump in technology and innovations we have become a victim on more than one occasion of technology in one way or another. therefore the scenario comes in to force where if you can`t beat em join em so we are looking at setting up an electronic arm to facilitate, cctv, alarm access control etc fitment, servicing maitainance etc, as the pinned post suggested you need to talk to people in the know and not just chuck some cash a any old idea. we have no knowledge of this type industry except for the odd dealing, no fitment or set up experience, we have a salesman who currently obviously…

Hi. We did a job last week in London and the site manager was a nightmare we was not aloud steps or ladders on site they had hired the push along small towers from HSS. I can understand the steps point of view to a level but there was rooms on site we couldnt wheel the rigs in to and it was hard sometimes not to damage walls or door frames. So what elevation method are you using is it practical will it fold into my Focus and where did you get it from. We also had 6 externall cameras to fit we couldnt use ladders so asked to use the on site picker we have the IPAF but no machines where aloud to be operated while he was off site he had took the afternoon off so we use…

Well, it may not be the most conventional way of starting up, but I've just decided on a name I liked, ran a search at companies house and purchased an 'off the shelf' company from the net! I am now the director of Beacon Security Ltd ! : After trawling through the DTI, Inland Revenue and VAT links kindly provided by Alastair, and all the replies to previous posts, I have decided to move in to sub-contracting and working for myself. It seems I can subby for the big nats. whilst still trading as a company (doing bells only to start with). So, I thought I'd post a little update every now and then as it may be good reference for others thinking of starting and entertai…

Has anyone (installers) had any joy with the Custodian home monitoring scheme that they are pushing at the moment? Can't think of the name of it but it amounts to them mailing a list of non monitored maintenance customers that you give them on your letterhead and offering to give a key holder response only to activations. Sounds ok in theory, just wondering if anyone has any success with it

Does anybody know where I can pick up a few meters of this stuff? It's the kind of conduit used for protecting bell cables from where the cable comes out of the wall and up to the bell box. I'd like to get some to protect a small run of cable to my garden shed. Can I get it at CEF or is it a bit more specialised than that? Thanks!
