You've given loads to go on in 'what's involved?'. Thanks a lot I do quite like the sounds of the sub-contracting route and, again, would appreciate all your views and advice. Who do you know of that offers subby work? (I live in Manchester) What do you need to start other than work, car and tools? do you have to adhere to the same rules and regs that apply to starting a business? etc, etc, etc?! Thanks in advance Brian

Hi I'd like to think I'd be a good boss and run an efficient company with good conditions. however, i don't know the first thing about it! I have considered starting up on my own and would like to give it a go one day. Just to give me an idea of what's involved, i'd appreciate your comments. Do you start on your own at first or see if people are willing to go in with you? Do you build it up from small house jobs in a cheapo van or get a loan and start as you mean to go on with logo's/advertising/vehicles/etc? Is there a short way to explain VAT, insurance, accreditation issues etc?! Is there too much competition? Do you stick with what you know or get stuck into a…

I aquired second hand a Phillips TL24a time lapse recorder for a CCTV system but have no idea what the unlock code is, so at this point the unit is worthless to me. If anybody know how to unlock it without a code I would really appreciate any help.

I am a newly established sole trader in the industry, I'm moving into installing monitored systems as well as "bells only" and dialler systems. Do I need inspectorate approval before I can get Police response to my monitored systems? Any help and advice would be appreciated? Many thanks

I am newly established soletrader in the industry, I've been self-employed for 18 months and spent the first year sub-contracting nationwide to a national firm, until deciding to take the plunge and go it alone in my local area(April 2004) Up until I have only been installing "bells only"systems and systems on diallers. With the impending EN regs coming in to force in October I am looking to gain NSI (Systems Silver) approval in the coming months and move in to installing monitored systems to get up to speed with competitors in the area and have a wider range of services to provide to potential customers. I was hoping to get some advice from any of you that may have be…

I've been looking at the Texecom Prestige MR. It seems to be a good PIR because of the amplified IR signal using mirrored optics. Can anyone tell me when you might install a Prestige MR instead of a Prestige QD, and vice versa? Thanks

There has been a bit of talk recently in the media regarding the UK power supply over the comming months. Basically, because of under investment in the industry they may not be able to supply demand during the winter and power cuts have been predicted. Anyone know any more than this? like how likely power cuts are and how long they may be for? Also, besides stocking up on batteries, what more can we do? [solar backup charge circuit anyone ?!]

Hi all, I am an approved electrician of 15 years exp based in Oxon and I am hoping to move more into the security side of the trade. In the past I have used alarm gear as supplied by one of our wholesalers (CEF) by the name of Challenger. They are a buying group who sell on other peoples kit via CEF. I have found this equipment to be installer friendly and basically reliable. My question is should I be looking to use equipment from 'better' manufacturers ? Is this gear any good ? I mainly plan to do small domestic installations. Details of Challenger products can be found at: www.challenger.co.uk Any advice would be appreciated. Regards, Paul. (Go easy on me !)

Sorry to ask as I'm sure many others have done, but here goes..... I have a choice of: Yale wirefree alarm (dials out if triggered) Visonic wirefree alarm (except for power to bell box, but the rest is wirefree) Or my insurance company offering installation of a wired bell box, 2 PIR, 2 door contacts for £399 All wirefree alarm prices work out the same as the wired alarm by the time I've added a couple of sensors over what you get in box. So is it wirefree and DIY, or £399 wired and done for me.... Anyone know what the Norwich Union Direct alarm deal is like (this is the £399 wired offer above)? Thanks all.

I'm just starting to look at fitting more alarms and want to settle on one or two decent panels and accessories to use rather than the ADE stuff I've been used to fitting. (sorry, I now realise that probably wasn't the best choice). If anyone spots anymore flaws in my plans please let me know! I've just fitted a Texecom speech dialler and was impressed, (not that it was that hard to beat the ADE Informa), so I had a look round the Texecom site to see what else they've been up to. I was impressed with the Premier range and have downloaded the installation instructions, (I like to have a good read of the installation manual before even attempting to do anything with an unk…
