Hi there, I'm installing a new alarm system, there was a very old system that I have now stripped out leaving the cables in place. The person that did the original install ran the cables in trunking along side mains cables and again along side them through holes under the floors so I'm going to run new cables well away from them in new trunking etc... There is however four cables running to where the panel was in the hall which I wanted to re-use for the new one to save chaneling the walls etc... theres a cable from a light switch running in close proximity up the wall though, I have scanned the wall and its maybe a 15cm area up the wall so they may well be segregated …

Hello folks, Absolutely NOT something I'm going to buy but an intriguing leaflet arrived at home today. Better not say who from, though some of you can probably work it out. It's offering a wire-free alarm with communicator for 20% less than you can supposedly buy it in a big DIY chain store with 12 months "free" monitoring included. Monitoring means they phone the property, make a decision based on the response and potentially contact up to 6 nominated people (by phone, text or email). Monitoring renewal is about

  3. Hi, We moved house a while back, and there was a Scantronics 9800 alarm system fitted. The previous owners said it hadn't worked for about 10 years. It was showing a fault code and was squealing fairly quietly. I pulled the fuse, it went quiet and I didn't think any more about it. Now, after a break in nearby, I took a longer look at it. The installation manual was there, I followed the reset procedure, programmed it up and it seems to work OK, except the batteries (control panel and outside bell) need replacing (it shows bF and the battery is clearly past it). Only other thing is the previous occupants silenced the keypad sounder by destroying it with a screwdriver, s…

Ive just fitted a new system, just a Texacom 8Compact panel and Texacom Odyssey 1E with one dual tech. Every thing works fine until I set the system it goes straight to alarm once the exit times out. I narrowed it down to the strobe, when I disconnect it the system works fine, but when reconnected the problem is back. If I test the strobe from the panel it works fine. Thanks for reading all EDIT sorry its an 8Compact

Hi there i'm about to embark on installing an alarm. Does anybody know of any good reference material that can be used to help install an alarm? - either on the web or books? How useful do people find the literature that comes with alarms? (maybe most of you don't need this now though?) Many Thanks,

  6. I've got one of these with a dead battery. Every time the power glitches, even for a few seconds, the alarm goes haywire, registers a tamper fault and the sounder goes off. Even though there's enough power to run the sounder, the keypad goes haywire and you can't reset the alarm until the power comes back. Essentially, all I want to know is: 1. Do I need some sort of code to disable the alarm before I open the panel? Or is there anyway to stop the alarm sounding if I turn the power off? 2. Will the alarm retain it's programming when the old battery is disconnected? 3. Do I need an engineering code to reset the alarm once the new battery is installed? Thanks.

Hi I need a new battery for my Optima 2 plus alarm. The one I have at the moment is this - Yuasa - Valve regulated sealed acid type rechargeable battery NP1.9-12 12V 1.9Ah In the alarm manual, it states 'it is recommended that at least a 2.6 or 6Ah is used' As far as I can tell, the Yuasa battery is not the correct one - but can someone explain what the '2.6' in the manual is referring to? I have seen this battery for sale online - would it be suitable for my alarm? Power-Sonic PS1229 12v 2.9Ah rechargeable SLA Battery - www.power-sonic.com/site/doc/prod/83.pdf Or can anyone recommend a good battery to buy? Many thanks in advance

Hi there, sorry if this post is totally ridiculous but thought I would ask it. I have ordered an alarm system which I will be installing when I receive it. What are the recomended colours for each wire to do what? I presume red is +12v black is neutral etc.. - would have thought this will be in the manual, but this leads me to another question, if there is a standard for the colours which I'm sure there is, if you we're a top notch burglar and knew this then isn't it a disadvantage having that standard as the thief could strip a cable and cut say the 12v to a bell box if he had access?...just a though anyway...

  9. Hi. I have an intermitment problem (3 times in 4 weeks) where my alarm sounds when in part set mode, but when I check no zone has been activated. I have a speech dialler, but as the system isn't being activated this obviously isn't triggerring either. I have two questions: Firstly, does anybody have any idea why this would be happen? Secondly, does anyone have any recommendations for an independent alarm engineer in the Oxford / Swindon area? My alarm is a Gardtec Eurosec CPX, fitted 18 months ago by a NACOSS registered firm and serviced 3 months ago. It is still under a maintenance contract, but because of a fall out with the company I would prefer to find someone…

  10. I recently had to upgrade my alarm panel because the old one died on me. I replaced the old Menvier TS400 with a new Ade Optima Compact Gen4. At the same time I also added another sounder (Pyronix Belle) to the CQR Sentra sounder I already had. The install went well and everything tested ok with just the Sentra attached or, with just the Belle attached. When I attached both I couldn't get the sounder to work on the Belle although the strobe worked ok. The Sentra still worked perfectly. I should say that I used to be a qualified Engineering Manager before I retired - mainly mechanical but I did have a working knowledge of electrics. These are the terminal markings (igno…

  12. I have an ADE Optima Compact 6 zone panel and have Melcom Micron PIR's which are N/O type. I am aware that the ADE panels are N/C. What do I have to do to wire them up? I have read that I will need some 33 Kohm pull up resistors - why are they required and where would I buy a couple of them? Would it be easier just to get some N/C PIR's The system will have two PIR's downstairs, a contact on front door and a keypad upstairs. The PIR's are on the one zone. The house is a fairly new one which had alarm wiring pre-fitted . The downstairs zone has a wire looping into kitchen then terminating in the lounge. Thanks

  13. Started by rustyjames,

Hopefully a simple but silly question. I need to refit a surface mount rectangular magnetic sensor to a garage door that has just been replaced. Before the old door was removed I took off the magnet and sensor, leaving all the wiring intact (it runs to a small junction box type thing). Now the silly bit - I carefully remembered that the sensor was fitted with the wire running up into it when fitted - what I didn't realise is the screw holes are countersunk on both sides so either side could potentially face the magnet. Both the magnet and sensor have a pair of screw holes offset to one side (the opposite side to the wire entry on the sensor). I'm assuming the actual …

As the title says, "How do I charge up the back up battery from a control panel"? I've replaced my old Optima G3 control panel and want to use the battery for other things. 12v so is it safe to use a car battery charger?
