I was thinking of replacing our old Menvier 2 Zone panel which is ancient, more imprtantly the tenants in the flats and shops have trouble resetting it when they set off the smoke sensors... (Doesn't happen too often) but some of them are scared to go near the panel. The buttons are absolute **** on this unit. Sadly I never installed it, but there are around 12 detectors, one break glass and 2 big bells off the panel. Detectors are daisy chained obviously (2 zones) with a 12k EOL resistor at the end of each run. I'd really like an addressable system, but prices for conventional seem steep enough. Am I right in thinking, there is no such thing as a cheap / decent fire…

I have been asked to look at putting a fire alarm in a checken shed, wherehouse size ones. Has anyone got any good suggestions? I thought about end to end beams but still not sure about the dust aspect. The only other thought so far is heat detection but would be slow to respond. Either liner cable or point detection. Has anyone done this type of building before?

We’ve been asked to quote for 2 small accommodation blocks used by a training company. It's mostly ex-army guys on resettlement... As per the FRA we quoted L2 (the layout actually makes the system L1) and EML as required. They've made contact with the old occupier of the building who happens to be a company specialising in firefighting in maritime environments. They have stated, I kid you not, "you don't need any of that stuff because all the students are ex-army and therefore strong and fit enough to climb out of the windows if there is a fire". When I left the army I obviously missed out on the super smoke sensing skills when fast asleep award.

Tomorrow I am going back to a site which we did a one off service on a couple of weeks ago. We flagged up the fact that the fire beams (2 x addressable sets and 3 x conventional sets linked to a card) are not activating in fire nor fault. The panel is an advanced and the beams are apollo (the reflector plate type). The addressable ones are showing normal on the panel, and the conventional ones are showing a green LED on the front of them, so I figured that all were aligned correctly. To test them I tried two things, one was to spray smoke and another was to slowly block the reflector with a piece of cardboard. Nothing worked. I then blocked the reflector for a good 10 m…

Hi Guys, can you clarify please. i'm on site today wiring up door entry, CCTv and card access, sparks were completing the fire alarm, big debate breaks out between owner (good client if mine) and the sparks about a motorised hatch operation top of stairs. this is a G2 listed building being converted from offices into 6 flats, has basement (not occupied), ground, 1st and 2nd floor, wooden stairs, common area fire alarm Owner has checked regs and believes the roof hatch should open if the fire alarm activates, the thinking being its not a fire on the staircase, but smoke from a fire in a flat, would obscure vision of escaping residents, hatch opens to exhaust the smoke.…
