Hi, I'm currently getting a new house built and the builders wanted £800 to install an alarm system (I thought this was way expesnive so told them to shove it) Any way as its a brand new house I don't want to be carving up walls to trail wires etc etc. So I was thinking about getting a wireless system. Is this a good idea ?? What type would you recommend ? I'm looking to pay £200 - £300 is this reasonable, or am i way short. I think I'd need 4 PIRS, and probably 4 - 5 door / windows contacts. Have looked on B&Q site but wasn't to impressed, and they only seem to have 2 PIR's in a box!! Is this normal? Thanks for all your help and recommendations in advance…

Found this today under loft insulation whilst installing an alarm: The flex feeds a 500w security light. The bare copper that comes in from the left is actually a wire coat hanger that is attatched to the metal framework in the attic (you can see a small piece next to the screwdriver). As you can see, the flex earth wire is twisted around this coat hanger and taped up. The live for the flex is twisted to the live on the incoming feed and taped up. The other end of the coat hanger is twisted to the earths in the 3 T+E cables you can see on the right. One of these cables goes to the landing switch, the other two split off to feed two wall lights on the landing. The mains…

Just started my new job in fire industry over here. Standards are soooo different. Detection circuits on a floor do not have to be in fire proof cable and do not have earth monitoring. Only runs up vertical penetrations have to be fire proof. Best part, annunciation circuits dont need to be fire proof either, bells or PAVA. Saw one today wired in what looked like heavy duty bell wire. I cant help thinking our standards are probably amongst the best in the world. I have seen loads of office buildings with no detection or MCPs at all. Dont need them. Systems are designed over here to protect structure rather than life. I am not complaining, just making a comparison i suppos…

Hi, gurus I have a strange one. We are involved in a one off custom project and want to make the cctv system look 'amazing' What im looking at doing is writing a front end for our system that can show live images etc There are tv's all over the place and i plan to display my front end on these Im thinking of having a site plan and as motion is detected in each area highlight the area on a 2d floor plan with diferent colours. I would aslo like to keep all cameras in a small split in a corner and move and resize them as the go into alarm. I accept it wont be much use but what im trying to achieve is wow factor. So anything goes within reason as long as my coding abilit…

  6. I'd be interested to hear from anyone that programs their monitored customer's panels to send signals to both primary and seconday telephone numbers. The central station get the signal sent to the primary number and a receiver at your office (or home) receives the signal sent to the secondary number. You get to keep a check on the central station, you get live activation history and you also get early notification of possible service calls. Down side is the customer has to pay double for calls. Telephone call costs aside - would this kind of system be handy to some alarm companies ?

Have just been given some grade 3 flush contacts to fit they have eol resistors fitted and resistor across the contact but what a pain to fit, is this normal? Working of the manufacturer's spec I should have had 10mm clearance but this was very hitty missy! I eventually fitted one at a diagonal angle and the other one 5mm above the center line of the switch to make them work, Am I missing the principle of these double reed switches

I'm thinking of picking up a cheap laptop for putting all my manuals onto (would take forever to print them all out). Would possibly be using it for internet access and a bit of word processing but not much else. As I know nothing about 'em, can anyone recommend me something decent that won't break the bank? Budget is about

Two words 'Pet Immune', what is the general opinion, we have tested the fish eye visonic digital and decided that the only animal it 'picks up' is an elephant with a fever! Yes they were positioned correctly Texecom Pet immune (no comment) except we will not use them!! Some are useless others are slow. We have 1600 installs, and the jury is still out on pet immune. General opinions please.

We did a take over from hell today. this customer had an upgrade from a 9600 to an Avanti ( i think ) in march this year and got charged over 800 quid + vat for the works. The customer wanted had problems with the install and the price so ended the maintenance and came over to us. The custromer wanted a new panal as was not impressed with the avanti so we quoted a galaxy. We got the go ahead and i priced the job up thinking well its a local NSI gold company that did the work so i should be an easy panel change. Oh how wrong I have never seen anything like it. This is the work if a nis gold company, the JB had no lid and wa stuffed under some boxes in the loft.…
