Hello to you all! Kind of just signed up. Trained as a domestic/industrial electrician. After a redundancy, took a job with Thorn Security and worked removing/installing Intruder Alarm systems between 1994 and 1999 (Until the merger). While at Thorn, I was lucky enough to work with some of the more senior engineers, many of which had to manufacture equipment on-site during the early days- I was also fortunate enough to work with security alarm equipment dating from the 1950s up to the more modern equpment. It was seeing the variety of methods used in years gone by that sparked my intrest in vintage kit! Moved on in 1999 to work in the Film Industry as a "…

Hi Everyone, I currently work for a Subcontracting Agency and we are always looking for quality installation, service and commissioning engineers that can work on all disciplines within the fire & security industry. We cover the whole of the UK and also have opportunities, for the right individuals, abroad. Hi everyone, I've been in the Industry for over 21 years now and spent the last few working in Security overseas. Now I'm back home and wondering whether to look for work with one of the Nationals or to go back subbying again. My old subby buddy has moved away so will need to find another again if I went down that road. How is everyone finding work at the moment. Particularly around the West Midlands? Busy enough? This seems like a great site with a wealth of info. I've heaps of experience from Install to Project Management. If any of my old buddies from Shorrock, Modern or ADT are around, drop me a line

Hi Everyone I work for a communications installer but we are expanding in to security so thought this site may be a good place for knowledge. Our core business is data, fibre and wireless communications through out the UK. We have started installing CCTV, access control and more recently fire detection systems. We predominantly use self employed/subcontractors so moving in to this as a new area should be interesting whilst we find our feet! Based on the initial 20 or so jobs we have tendered for, we are sticking mainly to IP based systems as we have the networking knowledge already, so just a case of learning everything else! Not to mention as our belief that th…

Greetings everyone, I am a bit of a special case I guess ) I'm an internationally experienced security technician being mainly self employed since 2001 now. Over the years I have specialised mainly in IP video, access control and building communication, but I did also lots of alarms. I came quite around a bit as I'm Croatian by origin, grew up in Germany, went to Croatia at the end of that blody war of ours and spent there 15 years. When business just took of seriously and we had our hands full of work with large IP video systems for shopping malls and business towers, back in 2010 the recession killed the construction industry and us along with it. Took the opportunity a…

Hi everyone, this is my second time here (I think) I was a member way back in 2005 or there abouts couldn't remember any of my original log in stuff. Been in the alarm and CCTV industry since 1998 and self employed since 2004 Rejoined because its always nice to have another source of information for help and airport. And from time to time to share what I know.

Hello all, Not employed in the industry, but about to start operating a commercial photography studio with various high-end assets to protect, as well as a gallery containing various originals from a few big-names. In the process of working alongside an alarm company to specify a suitable system. Had some good (some terrible) experiences with a few alarm companies, both large and small, and realised it would be useful to educate myself about the fundamentals/basics of alarm and surveillance systems. I'm not the type to meddle/tamper-around with electrics or attempt self-installs, I leave that to you-pros (and quite right too) so I'm more of a nosey by-stander…

  15. Hi Perhaps someone has some idea of the problem, that can help. Our alarm went off a few weeks ago, while we were on holiday. The neighbor came in and reset using the PIN - panel showed a red light on zone 2. We have never then reset the panel, as the kids have been at home all day. Perhaps this was a mistake. Last night the alarm went off again - this time the panel showed a green light on the top icon - a short dash, with a small "squiggle" above it. All went off after a while. Then the control panel sounder activated, this time showing the green padlock icon. This morning, all is quiet except the panel is now showing the hammer icon - is this a …
