Hello There, Just a quick help question. I have been given the task to go look at a Gardtec 539 panel. From reading the Gardtec literature this has an onboard digi modem and is capable of upload/download via the software available from Gardtec. This would obviously make my life easier for some re-programming testing e.t.c My question is besides the software do I need a special lead e.t.c or is it a simple RS232 plug in from my laptop, also is the local communication via the digi modem card or is there a comms port on the main board. Thanks for any info Jim

First I would like to thank those contributors to my previoooous thread, thanks! From your contributions I feel that a 'Quad' is probably the way to go. The present PIR has three wires from it, +ve, +ve and -ve trigger wire. From what I can tell from specs, the trigger wire would go from a realy that is fail safe closed. I want something that sends a signal when triggered. Can anybody help me please. if anybody could ssend me a copy an installation leaflet for a 'run of the mill' PIR I would appreciate it so that I can get a clearer idea of the connections and operation. Many thanks, John

I'm replacing an Optima XL4 alarm and I'm slightly puzzled as to how to go about removing the thing without setting it off. I've got hold of the manual but I'm still not clear. What's the order of work to remove it without triggering a tamper alarm?

Hello, I am in the process of getting some quotes for an intruder alarm system from various local suppliers and just wanted to a little advise. When the installer talks about number of zones (for example 8), is this the number of devices that can be added to the system ?. The reason I ask is I am having a garage/workshop built in the future and wanted to make sure I had spare capacity. So if I have 8 devices in my home (eg PIR's door contactys e.t.c) then I would need to expand the system in the future for the garage. I want to make sure I ask for and get a system which meets with this requirement - at least I can then compare all qotes e.t.c and know a little of wha…

I am currently looking at intruder alarms and have narrowed my search to 2 possible types. Bosch VR8 system (now called SCP8) or the Yale HSA3500. Does anybody have any experieince or can advise which may be the best one. As I work for a subsiduary of Bosch I can get a good discount on their system but have not seen any reviews e.t.c for this system. I know Bosch are generally good products but the Yale system looks pretty good. Any feedback would be gratefully received. Alternatively any other recomendations ? Thanks Chris

I'm trying to change my user code on the Veritas R8 panel. I followed the user instructions but it didn't work. I've got 2 entry panels, one at the front door, one at the rear. Will this make a difference, and if so, what else do I have to do? Many thanks in anticipation. Martyn B

I've been thinking of a change of career, I'm interested in becoming a locksmith. At the moment i'm looking into the different course but not to sure which is best? if they are any good. Would it be best to try and start as a trainee first? I spoke to one person last week who reckons I shouldn't but didn't give any reasons why? Does anyone have any advice or expereinces of how best to get into the industry thanks Paul

We currently have a fairly basic wired alarm that was already installed in the house. The panel is in the cupboard under the stairs and needs to be accessed to arm and disarm. A lot of the wiring is visible which i consider unacceptable and the building work we're doing at the moment give the opportunity to upgrade and conceal the wires. I've been looking at the Powermax wireless system since there are a few areas (notably the kitchen and back door) that i cant reach with concealed cable. HOwever, there are a lot of other areas where i CAN hide wiring and i'd prefer to hardwire the devices in these areas for cost and convenience. I also like the phone monitoring on t…
