Can Anyone Recommend 2 Cam + Dvr Setup For Home Use?

Featured Replies

Hi, i'm looking to get a cctv system to cover my driveway and rear garden within a small budget upto £500

I only need 2 cameras, and want those to be IR dome cameras so they are not as noticeable, there is no lighting so i presume IR is a must

Ideally an IP system so i can view them remotely on my iphone

I plan to fit the front camera just under the fascia at the top of the house, it will cover a distance of approx 15m, the rear camera will cover the rear extension and will be fitted just above door height so it will cover the rear patio doors and surrounding area with a max distance 5-10m

Any recommendations - ideally with links :)

Thanks

Unfortunatly that is maplin money ( your budget ). With cctv you have to spend reasonable money to get a good, reliable setup.

Cctv seems to be the main security remit where people really dont spend enough and then wonder why the pics are poor and / or its unreliable.

I would either spend more, or not at all personally.

Id agree with above, spend elsewhere will give better vfm

Just to conclude on the above comments there is plenty of CCTV kits that you can buy for that money but we dont think you would get anything that would be any good, in other words a waste of money.

As above, buy cheap and when you need to use the thing as evidence the quality is dire, the clock and date is wrong so inadmissible in court. ( Seen that a few times).

Cheap cams flare up in bright sun and see nothing in the dark.

(Perhaps I can persuade Peter to show a till in pitch darkness with our DVR and Camera, looks like daylight and the quality is superb) .

Thanks for the responses

I know you guys may be used to installing pro kits but this is a 2 cam DIY job so Im not guarding the crown jewels lol, my wireless IR baby monitor gives good video in complete darkness ( http://www.summerinfant.com/boost/video/baby-touch%C2%AE-plus ), so if a wireless camera can do that i dont see why i wouldnt be able to find a wired camera for approx £150 each that wouldnt be able to do a half descent job - it doesnt need face/number plate recognition etc.. And if any of you watched this weeks gadget show you would have saw how phone camera technology is nearly at par with professional video cameras

Yep that budget would struggle to buy a decent DVR at cost, never mind the rest of the kit.

I've had a look on systemq.com and can get an alien hero 654 DVR for £139+vat (no HDD - i have one i can use) - seems to be alot of good feedback for the alien range and this seems to fit my needs, it records video and has remote network/phone viewing - not sure why this wouldnt be able to do the job?

So that leaves me around £165 per cam

Most of the ones in this budget seem to cover 30M IR, have 600+TVL, however being a newbie has anyone tried or seen any cameras that could be suitable for my requirements?

I've seen cameras from Xvision, Nitedevil, Genie, Ganz, Qvis & Twilight

tbh i thought SystemQ were trade only?

but no matter, the Alien range is generally good kit, but i've not used all the versions.

many only use high end kit, but then they have a client who actually pays for it - not them. and thats fine but cost is not a direct equation of either usability io quality, ask them if they and all their engineers drive Range Rovers, and if not why?

your home is not a shopping complex, your requirements are much simpler. little point installing a £22k system to check who is knocking over you waste bins as example.

modern day cheap cameras will often run rings around what were expensive high end cameras made only a few years ago, it's those that get rebadged are often sold off cheap, just due to advancing tech specs this trade craves.

tbh if light pollution is not a problem, i'd fit auto floods, cheap to buy more convenient at night for anyone legit, gives an element of safety to lone females and a deterrent to baddies.

do not rely on ir lighting from the domes other than a secondary light source, apart from 'tunnel vision' at night, they attract spiders which spin webs over the lens, the ir energy bounces back into the lens.
