Firmware is not guaranteed to prevent a vulnerability but it will certainly help to minimise the risk as well as being good practise (Unless the new firmware introduces the exploit (doh!))

It would be safer to disable UPnP and manually map the required ports. Turn off WPS too...

Yeah I wouldn't forward the port until they fix this.
