Asbestos!

Ithought i would post here as this is a fire project and the fire guys generally IMO have a very balanced vue.

We likely have a project that we thought we had got rid of by out pricing. System is roughly 200 detectors and 70 door retainers and none of this is relevant. The corridors ceilings are all Asbestos.

I considered wall fixed tray but the kids will swing from it. i moved to wall fixed trunking and unistrut across the corridor but considered the drilling and vibro would be more harmful.

I would like your thoughts on my final decision. Now bare in mind im going to sub the install BUT i would never ask anyone to do something that i wasnt prepared to do myself.

I am proposing to run a YT3 self adhesive trunking onto the asbestos ceiling and screw drywall screws through the trunking into the asbestos. Exsperimenting with plasterbord and cardboard shows the self adhesive seals any dust and the only danger i can identify is removal of any screw. The same principle applies to the detector base where im proposing using a plasic MK backplate with a full size adhesive pad. Classrooms either side are not asbestos. I am using a metal clip for the fire cables within the trunking.

Would you guys be comfortable with the instal or am i asking to much. I intend to do an air sample before during and after. Your comments are appreciated and welcome. The Radio option is not acceptable.

From what I can remember from threatened course, you aren't allowed to break the asbestos. This would include screwing into it.

Could well be wrong though.

Might be worth checking with relevant authorities as errors here could prove expensive.

I would also employ a qualified asbestos specialist prior, as I also think you cannot drill into it.

So no, I wouldn't be comfortable and maybe that's why you have won it based on others not wanting it?

Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

You cant do anything that makes it into a dust (Its the dust thats dangerouse thats what your breath in and it hangs in the air for days and weeks) so drilling and screwing is a no no. Not sure if you can glue but would it hold it up and even so would that be compliant with 5839 for fixing, the fixing on the wall may work but hard to say for sure.

I cant offer anything positive sorry

Thx, Im with Peter on this one. My issue is one of dust. I also beleive the dust is a big NO.

The last similar project i remember involved a specialist who glued then sealed the sides of a timber batton before srewing into asbestos. My idea seems to me to be the same. I have contacted asbestos testing co for before during and after tests and he will only confirm zero dust but wont tell me hoew this is to be acheived. i have already made my mind up how im going to acheive this and here lies my problem. This is my desision and its one i wont get into trouble for right or wrong, because im the responsible person. I think im just looking for moral support. Im happy would you be happy if i asked you as an employee.

OR do you have a better idea? i liked my first idea which price myself out.
