I'd say test phones are not needed anymore and even less so going forward. Was useful in the old days I haven't carried one in years. Downside is I need to workout what's going in its cutout place in the case

House bashers need then for phone line jobs 

 

So does it not matter anymore what polarity a and b is?

Will pstn be like pressure mats, ultrasonic, foil, tube and wire etc etc. I'm sure the same debates existed. Even csl know pstn is passed it

I've not carried a test phone for years but occasional get caught out when needing to program a Pyronix Vocaliser or when there has been a fault on the BT line. Worth having even in 2019 imo. Think ill get one <_<

Always mattered with more than one phone , not always about ren..... 

 

Older equipment is an issue

just pick one up cheaply from ebay... I'd not pay £100 for one.

 

The only reason I have one was to be sure we it was'nt our kit that was faulty be telling the sub to get the line fixed

They can still come in handy at times, especially if you install telephone extensions as well or for quick testing when you run a line from the master to some out of the way cupboard with the panel in.
