whats the controller its connected too. looks like a mag swipe reader. i believe (never installed mag) that you need to know what track its reading on the cards.

mag stripe is a bit old now though, it depends on how many doors/cards exist as to whether its worth keeping

Yep, most are generic but as you mentioned you do have to watch out. Also lo co/hi co can throw the odd curve ball.
