Residential Cctv Setup

Jeez!  Newbie on here!  1st Post and probably my last considering there are some (obviously in the trade posters here) who think imparting some knowledge means they lose business.  And the troll like way that they respond?  Makes them sound like hawks picking over the same scraps.  

 

I run a business so I know how hard it is to become a professional at what you do.  Been doing it for 20 years.

 

I've come on here hoping for some advice - so would've asked some numpty questions (the trolls would have you believe)  BUT only because I want to have a better understanding of what I want to buy AND why I'm going to make those decisions.  The trolls its seems would have you believe I should go to my local security specialist (being that he is the professional) and let him quote me what he wants to sell me and hand over the cash because that's his business?   How would I know whether what he's recommending me is actually right for the job or whether it's a bulk discount deal he's got from the manufacturer?

 

How would I ascertain if I was getting ripped off by that same specialist?  I don't have years of experience in the security industry.

 

Try this business basic.  Offer sound advice.  Be fair. Be professional.  Apply a healthy but reasonable mark up.  Do a damn good job.  Then perhaps you would be busier working more and not need to spend so much time trolling on here and crying about the state of the security industry's decline.

 

I hope also, that if any of you trolls get stuck with a broken down car/washing machine/boiler/tooth that who ever is the specialist you go to for advice - that they treat you in the same arrogant and facetious manner in which you deal with some of the people on here.

 

I apologise to those professionals on here who do want to help people.

Welcome to the forum,

 

We do understand that to anyone on the outside looking in the security forums do seem like places where diyers come to get flamed rather than gain information. The problem is, people come here with high expectations and no budget. This is because the internet is flooded with cheap CCTV which most professionals would not trust to prop a door let alone secure their property. When CCTV went digital 10 or so years ago the box shifting companies selling computers thought they add another string to their bow by selling DVR's and cameras. As a result there are many variations of cameras and digital recorders out there, some are very good but unfortunately most are very poor. It is a case of you do get exactly what you pay for with CCTV no more no less, the price is a very good indicator to the quality in most cases. So when posters are told what they dont want to here they accuse us of flaming when really we are telling them as it is.

 

First off you need to decide the purpose of the CCTV system, once you know the purpose then you specify the system to the purpose. Any deviation from the purpose makes the system pointless. For example if the problem is that your car or shed is being broken into (or you are just worried that it might be) you will need cameras that will identify the person doing it. Otherwise whats the point? If your shed is broken into and the CCTV system does not identify who did it then the CCTV is only telling you what you already know. If you are only using the CCTV as a deterrent then dummy cameras is the cheapest solution.

 

I could give hundreds examples of purpose, it would be much easier if you just tell us your thoughts on the purpose of your CCTV. We will then give you ideas on what we think you should use. If its outside your budget then my advise would be save up or dont bother. The cheap stuff is exactly that

You need to be giving an idea of your budget in terms of pounds, you can buy rubbish, decent and superior systems and without a budget it is impossible to say what you can reasonably expect to get for your money and you may well get laughed at initially  if your budget is low and your wanting top spec.

 

The advice has been clear on what you need to setup your systems in general terms, without an idea of budget it will be difficult to say more specifically.

 

Secondly you may have to pay more at a supplier that sells to the general public, from this thread you will be aware that some wholesalers/ distributors will sell anything to anyone and others will not, those that sell to the general public may have an account price for trades people and a list price for the general public.

 

You are not going to get a Rolls Royce, if your paying Dacia prices?

 

Both will get you from a to b  but one is considerabbly better than the other and if you walked into a showroom and asked for a car, you would get asked some questions to narrow down your choices, budget being one of them.
