Security Installation Placement

Featured Replies

Hey. apologies in advance if this is the wrong section but I couldn't find a more relevant one.

My question is in regards of security placement:

When installing an intruder alarm, is there a specific height off the ground that the panel has to be? Or is it mostly a rough estimate for wherever feels most comfortable height for the user? I am aiming this question towards the professional installers as they are fitting it for a client as opposed to themselves. surely there must be a general guideline of some sort.

I want to ask the same question about door locks / deadlocks / door chains etc. Is there a specific height that they must be installed? I imagine with people of all different heights, there must be a guideline to suit the majority.

many thanks in advance,

By "panel" I guess you mean "Keypad" were the system is armed from?

No reg on mounting height in the specialist standards but you would need to take into account other building regs and DDA. But most keypads will be fitted at a height suitable for the users using it. The panel will normally be fitted at eye level in a room out of sight. It may be fitted against a cieling for aesthetic reasons etc

brilliant thanks for the info. for some reason i just assumed everything worked off the keypad box... i don't even think i know where the panel is located in my own home.

And locks have ideal placement.

Hence the popular multipoint and hinge protection. Height of letterboxes and glazed panels being avoided.

Your going to be one busy chappie.

Your system maybe old and it may not have the 2 units seperate. Some panels have everything in the control panel (on board keypad) ie wireless panels etc

The "panel" normally refers to the "End-Station" or "Main Control Box/Panel".

This can be a separate blank box where all the "brain's" are.

In this situation you would have a remote keypad.

Sometimes the panel and the keypad can be built in together, a "on-board" keypad.

This is why I used the term "keypad" as this covers all bases.
