Council with a sense of humour

nice one jef, i do agree with you and tried to cut long stories short. However, I make the point that regardless of whether we are Ltd(which I am) or sole trader, we should be able to prove that we can get or use resources at our disposal and offer the services you quite rightly deserve. A company cant stand, I understand the logisitics of business building, how many corner shop or little industrial unit maintenances to survive or to employ that first expensive engineer. For every Bob the alarm( feel sorry for the BoB's here)theres the people who use this forum who like yourself are knowledgable and passionate about the industry and its about time British Industry started recognising that fact. I attend seminars with start up businesses and see the fear in their eyes, what happens when Ive exhausted all my contacts from my previous employer. I give fire safety  lectures to groups of new landlords who are buying properties to let out, they think thats all they have to do, its a minefield for them. I'm not a tory by any means but I agreed with Maggies philosophy of free enterprise. One project manager proceeded to put his feet up on his desk during one interview with me and ask in a supercilious way ' well what do you think you can do for me then?'. I had to make a choice, in this case was it worth it so I told him ' the best thing I can do for you is leave you get some rest, you look like you need it' and walked out. This is the point i'm really trying to make, whether we're selling ourselves by interview or tender we have the right to reply and not have the urine taken out of us because you think you have the power that you can, AND I'M SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF ALL OF US BECAUSE YOU DESERVE IT TOO!!! Agree with most of the replies to this post.

Example-

Very large school with 50 cameras, i did the first instalation as a subby working for Sensormatic installing some 30 or so cameras. As the site consisted of 15 or so differant buildings and to keep the cost acceptable most of the cabling was done roof to roof but all our's was in trunking fixed to 2'x 2' paving slabs, looked great! Now I run my own company we have done more work at the same site installing another 20, and cable issues with what //.National Installer.// had added in the meantime. //.National Installer.// service guys are animals! they couldn't be bothered to take the trunking lid off to add their cabling and just threw it on the roofs open to all the elements, and while searching for cables in our trunking can't be bothered to put the lids back on afterwards.

I know some of these guys are being hassled by there bosses to get in and out as quick as possable but there is no excuse for lazyness.

Just to add, the install I did is still working fine and we have just upgraded all the cameras using state of the art Pelco Spectra domes and control equipment, all the cabling we installed was used again, no problems, all //.National Installer.//'s was replaced by request by the Burser of the school as he had no faith in the work they had done.

No wonder //.National Installer.// are being thrown off sites all around the country, everytime an engineer ( I use the term loosely!) arived at the site to fix a problem they would get on the roof returning 30 mins and tell the customer "It's cable issues mate so you will have to pay for the re-cabling.

Still more work for me! Happy days.

I would have thought that any install work would be done by the install dept.

No wonder //.National Installer.// are being thrown off sites all around the country,

You know this, how?

Strange this one as the school i was talking about had some additional work done by an //.National Installer.// dealer but not through //.National Installer.//. Educated people are obviosly the easiest of SUCKERS in not knowing the diffrence. But we all blame //.National Installer.// for the dealer Programe, Dont we!

I'm sure we've been here before. I think it's wrong to knock //.National Installer.// as a company, we may not like what they do, but they must be doing something right...... think about it. No matter who you use, in a national company your always going to get some part cutting corners, locals too. //.National Installer.// are easy pickings to knock, they're that big, and have that many sites, they're bound to have a few more rough ar*es hiding in among the decent crowd. I've worked for them in the past, employed, I'm no //.National Installer.// lover but the lads I worked with were great, no cpmplaints on bad jobs, we all did the job as if it were for ourselfs, all be it a *2 speed most the time!!! I know there are alot of current //.National Installer.// staff on here who do a good job, the charges, management and sales side are nothing to do with them, we should knock them all or tar with the same brush!!

Councils do get back handers it's a fact of life, everyone knows it goes on and there's little we can do about it. BIG UP Bri for his remark to the part who tried to insult him, they're jumped up little idoits at the end of the day pushing paper and reading from books, stuff um!! I think it is hard for the one man bands to get in on BIG installs that make the money, but one day they were all small co's too, I'm sure we'll all get there one day when they're long gone. I do alot of work for council but subbing, BECAUSE THEIR CHOSEN COMPANY DOESN'T HAVE THE STAFF!!!!! AND ARE SH**E AT WHAT THEY DO!!! What a joke, if we approched them they's laugh at us. Complete joke I know, but then again who are we but humble servants!!!

I too think this is quite true.

Without banging on about the old days which thankfully my children are grateful for not making their lives hell about. I started my intruder days with Chubb. My first real job if you like after my electrical apprenticeship. Not cosseted by my peers but working with real adults and thrown into deepend end stuff( was put on call first saturday of my first week with them and I knew nothing at all about intruder alarms only Fire. Cant be that hard can it. ) Did I find out the hard way :realmad:

Anyway(feel like Ronnie Corbett in his chair),we used to go to the cafe for morning brekkie after office visit and who would be in there too but AFA Minerva guys,Shorrock were just starting too, you get the gist. We all stayed and had coffee and brekkies together and shared mutual experiences. We were all mates. As we grew we went in diffrent directions, now in 2005 those people either have their own companies of which ironically we still meet from time to time and are still friends and a lot of the AFA Minerva guys are still with //.National Installer.//.

There is point to be made here and its worth noting, this forum is for the use of ranting, raving and all sorts of other stuff. My company name is Fire Alarms UK Ltd and if all the slagging that goes on in the name of another was in my companies name this web site would be struck off. I have to remind you all that we are proffessional people here and to slag off other companies is a no no, moderators or no moderators. All companies have warts, yes some more than others but lets use that to our advantage and exploit it.Ive worked with and for some great guys in my life who have taught me a lot, where they go and who they choose to do it with is up to them.

Love you all ;)
