I think i have had them work before. Think it just doesn't work the other way around.

I only know by fluke. Accidentally programmed a switch2 fob.

universal reader or their own card reader?

They will only work with the P50 readers not the standard net 2 readers

the p38, p50 etc is available in both paxton only and universal. Im assuming its not the paxton card/tag and the universal reader?
