Largish Alarm System, Component Install Order

Featured Replies

Got a G2 + 1 maybe 2 powered RIOs to go in.

Is there a recommended standard order for fitting components in or does each installer have his own way of doing things, what do you find works best?

Space out the Power RIOs so there is as little voltage drop as possible on the peripherals. Use good screened cable for the bus lines.

Use the resistors as indicated, you can get away with them on the keypads but I would still use them.

So location of controls then wire accordingly. Remember the limits on each for the number of zones, Or you`ll end up with a long run which you don`t really want. You can run a sounder/speaker from them but will lose a zone if it is an external sounder, Unless you play a game with the tamper switch. But it makes fault finding a little bit more complex.

Never thought about spacing out the RIOs like that, interesting stuff. I wonder if the distances involved would make that necessary in this case builing is 100 square meters and I was hoping to keep all the alarm kit together in the same node zero.

Noted for the sirens, only the one external so no problem for the tamper but I see what you mean!

I'll use resistors on the keypads as you say and remember to go into menu 55 and eneble them on entry

If it's not a no-no, I'll do as usual and connect it all up in one go before firing up. thanks for the info :)

We generally install PSUs for two reasons. One of them is because the current demand from the system can be more than the panel alone can supply. The other is to overcome the effects of voltage drop caused by long cable runs, therefore it is normal to situate power supplies close to the equipment that they are powering. It's pointless putting them all next to each other, especially in a building that large as you'll end up with unacceptably low voltages (keep above 12.5v at all times is a good rule of thumb), especially when running on standby power.

cables, then detections / other devices, then controls equip is my norm........

28 zones is not really quite a modest system in the age of sequential confirm,

In the first instance it was for the number of available zones and the available power for a few SABs and all the smokes and PIRs. Distance wise there's a maximum straight line distance of about 11 meters to the furthest point device, not sure if you think this is worth displacing a RIO for.

Thanks for that list, I'll stick to that.

I appreciate that this is very modest for you lot, it's big time for me though :) Working on tidying my cabling up at the moment, have made much progress. Maybe post some pics for your amusement.

Ahhhh, that makes more sense. I misread the building size in your second post. In that case, I would say it'll be OK keeping everything in one place. It won't do any harm to put one of them on the other side of the building though.

Thanks for the confirmation Antinode. There isn't really anywhere else suitable to put the other RIO/s but I absolutely love the idea of it, to use a rubbish analogy: sort of like a life support box for the devices on that side using a bus cable as an umbilical cord/life line :)

Oh and what's all this about "home dentistry", is there a DIY dentistry section here somewhere?
