Thanks, I've seen them mentioned before.

Can you recommend anywhere to get them that would be accessible to me as a DIY-er,

e.g.

Trade chain(s) that sell to anyone who turns up, pays cash and asks for the right thing (most in my experience)

Online store (I buy a lot of stuff online and get it delivered)

Me!

just something I heard - the current "buy a contact, get a box of batteries free.." deal isn`t all it`s made out to be?

Inadequately

What would you recommend?

And if I told you I'd have to kill you, wouldn't I ........

But basically,

First a "normal" test - i.e. does it work.

Then disconnect it from the alarm (at the panel) and let it sound on the internal battery for a while, having warned the neighbours.

As I said above I haven't let it run for 20 minutes to check that aspect or the battery capacity.

Nor have I been up the ladder.

Why not check what current its drawing to charge with no load on it.

Then check this against your readings 4 years ago?

As Angus has said - the clues in the name....

But seriously, I don't know enough about (NiCad? NiMH?) battery performance or have access to expected figures for that to be a meaningful exercise.
