Its usually the BIG companies that supply you with hand tools. i,ve never worked for a company yet that would supply me with any hand tools, usually my bosses give the same reasons as Pete.

My present employers supplied me , on my first week, with a Bosch SD battery drill, test meter, ladders, steps, co-ax stripping tool, 2 co ax crimper's, soldering iron (240v), gas soldering iron,(solder), CCTV test monitor, various CCTV testing equipment, drill bits, a safety bag(with all equipment like goggles, hard hat, yellow vest, first aid kit, face mask , safety locks and notices etc etc inside it), various programmers for europlex etc.

in short everything i needed apart from hand tools. Any new trainees starting get an tool kit provided though but i,m not sure if thats part funded by the training organization that we source from.

It would be nice to have a tool kit provided but as i never had one i always provided my own - i bought a tool case c/w tools on-line and the full collection is getting whittled down as i lose them!!

Thanks all for your comments - it is always useful to hear other people's views when there is a difference of opinion!! I will let you know what the end result is - as you probably worked out, I am trying to get the company to supply some new tools...

My 1st company supplied all I needed, but i did supply a few tools that i thought better suited the purpose, it was a small 3 man company, car and ladders and fuel all paid for.

The 2nd company again was small, they bought out my 1st company so didn`t have to supply anything at first, the agreement though was that if we had worn out or needed a tool we would buy it and claim the money back.

My new company (large national) supply everything.

All companies I've worked for have provided power tools and specialist tools/equipment. I've always provided my own hand tools.

That way seems fair enough to me.

Here employer pays tool compensation for employees who use their own tools. It is fair for both. Employers don't have to bother themselves with missing tools and employees get proper compensation for their tools that will get worn in their job..

Thou companies I have worked for have always supplied necessary tools.

drills and bits supplied by company

all hand tools by myself i prefer CK vde screwdrivers and KNIPEX cutters and pliers, best way of working, then if you ever leave always got a set of handtools you like and are used to

The end result was that I gave up! One of the other engineers didn't believe it to be fair that he had to buy his own tools, and others may get them free, so he dug his heels in!! I see where he is coming from but find it hard to understand why he struggles to look to the future...

So my company provides multimeter, battery tester and a dustpan and brush (seriously).

Ho Hum...
