Was on a intruder job last week where the dude doing the access control wired all his twenty or so mag locks in cat 5. Noob :)

ok, i will admit it is brittle and snaps, if installed correctly is perfect for the job.

No its not!

I know one installer now sweating on a job with over 3k metres of the stuff. Trying to blame anyone and everyone for it.

He deserves all the pain heading his way.

so you recommend using belden all the time or is there another type you would use ?

anything that's multi strand twisted pair and shielded im guessing

id recommend a cable sia uses. its osp 3 and 4. normlly use osp3 (3 pair) and double up the power. but on small stuff just use alarm cable

For Data?

Belden or equivalent. It's designed that way for a reason.

Whilst cat5 works, it is only for a short time. Problems start to manifest themselves as soon as any servicing/additions/mods need to be done. And it's never the original guy installing who has to sort it.

Take the example above with the mag locks. Its wire/cable. It works on install. Give it 6 months and them doors will need rewiring.
