yes. they were knicking the overhead HV lines and that caused the gas explosion.

Using google to find a bit more info, firefighters are on site cause theres a number of small fires in houses, fires cause gas leak...

I assume metal thieves have manged to cause an over voltage , which damaged appliances cuasing fire(s)
