nah he`s got trade full member

O/P you need to hold a printed set of the relevant standards, I think we got ours from our regulator, once you`ve got them its a simple case of siting down and reading them there really are too many different parts and " interpretations.." for anyone to pass on the answers to your questions.

as you`ll see by reading some of the threads here (not a bad place to start) even after 3 years or more most of us still cannot decide what the reg. writers actually meant

now wind yer neck back in LOL

i am actually an electrician who fits intruder alarms.

as standard i offer:-

Service or Maintenance scheme to a potential customer.

available 24 hours a day for emergencies.

respond to an emergency (i.e. a bell ringing that will not stop) within 4 hours.

remind the customer every year that the system is due for a service check.

i was not 'having a pop' at electricians, i'm not registered with either 'governing body' and thats well documented to the point of death (and believe me beyond  ).

i get a few calls a year where my client gets the offer of a premium discount if the alarm system were to be maintained by such a registered company. so when i point out i charge nothing for the standby service (which is also 24/365, and only advise not insist it is serviced regularly they soon realise the 'discount' they are saving is not making them better but worse off.

with top respect to you personally and all members who are also respected sparks, against a well trained experienced intruder alarm specialist engineer your standards would be very unlikely to match up or as fully comply, and i speak from long and very bitter experience.

much the same as me installing electrics (recent legalities aside), which i'd guarantee would work and be ultra safe, but you would no doubt laugh your ass off at my or any other alarm engineers 'cowboyish' attempts.

if you need you system for insurance cover it will need certification, so best ask a known tame local (off here perhaps) to come round a take it over.

so if compilant with EN 50131, what grade is the minimum required? does all equipment have to be to EN 50131? or only parts of it? What type of cable would be to this standard??

the simple answer is 'yes', as to be compliant means in it's entirety.

but it is not applied retrospectively on older systems usually, unless a serious loss break-in or, post code risk go's up or you increase the value insured substantially.

all the above depends on your insurance co attitude, most cave in but if argued with they will usually back down.

you could tell them you installed your system, as i doubt if they have ever read the codes or if they have will understand them anywhere as much as you do

thank you for all your replies, i think i will make a few calls tomorrow to get a copy of require regs then sit and read them.

if not a NSI or SSAIB member, the legitimate cost will be a few hundred quid (and out of date within 3 month's if your lucky).

it won't give you chapter and verse but guidlines on how to comply in every situation, much is open to individual interpretation and circumstances, just look through the rows in trade sections  .

simply google the numbers given above it will give you some of the info you need, then you can come back in here and ask what the heck they all mean, but then non of us really know for sure  and i've never read them anyway (according to some).
