School Cctv....difficult Senario!

Recommended Posts

As a CCTV specialist I hope that I would recognise when CCTV is not the most appropriate answer to a client's problems.

Schools are a classic example of the end user thinking that CCTV is the answer to all their problems and external CCTV rarely works.

Look at the operational requirement.

If you manage to gain reasonable images of the intruders what happens next?

If the caretaker happens to be monitoring the system and sees intruders 'live' what is he expected to do?

In my opinion target hardening is the route to go, fencing and aggressive planting to keep them out would be a more effective us of the Client's budget.

Hope this opinion does not ruffle too many feathers!

Perhaps, although i have CCTV work a treat in this situation. IMO and experience they tend to find somewhere they don't get to much hastle.

No ruffles whatsoever...appreciate yours and everybody elses input...seems to be quite an interesting topic!!

The Headmaster stated that they simply want to know when kids are hanging round school so they can contact police...hopefully this level of hassle make them move on...

Ive just been for a reece tonight and in the main playground it is actually lit up so I might be able to offer alternative to VD's

Iam a little worried as I want to offer best honest/solution so I will go with vandal proof domes but mention that I feel perimeter monitoring is the only real solution...At least there will be 4 spare channels on DVR :)

Every requirement is different and this really helps to keep CCTV interesting!

I'd have to agree with Ilkie's excellent comments

Schools are a slightly different ball game (if you'll pardon the pun), and in terms of protecting the site, CCTV is rarely the primary option, but rather a useful adjunct to other more practical systems.

In terms of trying to use CCTV for securing the perimeter of a school, that is rarely an achievable option when viewed in relation to a restricted budget.

It's often best to use various physical security options at the outer perimeter, and then concentrate any CCTV at key points, with defined objectives in mind.

For example, if cameras are required to cover the side of a building (and in partiular doors and windows, then siting two cameras in opposition should suggest to the casual observer that they cannot get to one without being in view of the other. Where budgets are very restricted, it's often possible to use one dummy equipped camera housing alongside a working unit, with the dummy being the more accessible. That way if anyone has a go at it, they will be caught on the working unit.

Concentrating on specific recognition points is also useful if post event analysis is likely to be required.

Also have a think about using a small number of internal cameras in key locations. School break ins are fairly common, as unfortunately are arson attacks, during the summer months in particular.

Planning is key, and if all the various risks and options are considered, it should be possible to come up with a workable system that not only meets the clients immediate objectives, but also addresses key concerns for the future.

Anybody know who does wall mounted poles??

Another possibility...the list is endless :bruce_h4h:

Contact your local Satellite TV trade outlet / wholesaler.

Wall mounted poles for satellite dishes are well made to prevent the Dish moving and loosing its lock on the satellite. You can also use these for CCTV and the cost is obviously favorable.
