arfur mo Posted May 11, 2006 Share Posted May 11, 2006 Reading that, the strangest thing pops into my head everytime, all to do with trumpets and blowing maybe mate, but i bet we all get some odd requests - engineering wise that is . we serve the general market and some the specialist section, i enjoy a challenge if only to give some 'spice' to our more mundain work. an electrical company some years ago were asked to give local control of the fishpond fountain, and associated lights for a car dealer client (just imagine marleene & boycy as a blueprint) in hornchurch. ok, so they said they would lift the patio sla.... - stop right there , no way was that to happen according to 'marleene' . so they offered radio control after having looked in the ATH catalogue. thet bought 1 off 8 channel Rx, and were given 8 x single channel tx's. now how many can you handle. they were simply trying to save money by not using someone with some electronic skills for advice (which would have been free), to get them out of the problem. i modified a single scantronic Tx with a rotary switch and push button to give 6 functions + all on or all off. it was well liked by the client, who then made the electrical firm sign a contract it would exclusive and not be used or offered in Essex or the home counties. (as if anyone else would want it ). he was into 'exclusive gadgets' to boast about - chavanism or what?. its a mad world, so if you can get paid handsomely to take part in it - why not? the biggest 'mod' i did was on a personal attack system for a probation office, it was sub-contract for a lead company. initially i was asked to do the whole job but was too busy for the time table allowed with my own stuff. the basic spec was - fit 2 stage panic alarm pushes, 1st stage is warn, 2nd stage is full alert. this was not readilly available off the shelf so needed some design work. i can't help as tide up so they approach a well known fire alarm company (why i will never know), who say they can do this using their programable digital fire panels. others install all the gear, i'm pleaded with to oversee the later stages on a high value contract for them. it's subcontract for me to a good client and freinds of mine, so i shoe horn some time in thinking all is well. i ask the fire alrn firm how the system will work, and a sample of the desk buttons for final fix, they are not forthcomming but eventually they supply a massive lathe machine size sequencial button to be placed under the desk's, i ask are you sure this will be suitable? oh yes, press once for warn, press again for full alert, so i ask 'if i press the button on monday morning i will get a warn?'. 'Yes' was the confident reply, and if i press the same button again on two weeks later? ---- ooops! the cold realisation suddenly dawned on him, followed by much specification reading for a loop hole. designing and fitting the mod to allow the system to comply, was both fun and profitable B) see what i mean about odd request's, its not trumpet blowing as you put it, i just find it fascinating examples from over the years. regs alan I once put a pinhole camera in the MDs penthouse lift to catch a disgruntled cleaning operative who liked to have a **** in it.... The theory is flawed for a kick off. If he has OCD or germophobia he would be very unhappy with fingerprint recognition if it had been available. Also, how does he get in his house....keys? He would be the only person to handle his keys and the addition of a fob wouldn't be a huge issue as all he would have to touch would be the fob (just like his keys) as the reader is proximity. prox was not available at the time, just comming 'on tap' a little later with tunstal. as for the front door it has an american made motorized lock (as used in the prisons), fired from his car remote and not fitted by me but a specialist from New York flown over, he has packs of baby wipes everywher inspecial holders and waste bins to match Now then, assuming I was wrong in all the above, I flatly refuse to believe that any insurer in any part of the world would accept a risk of If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!! Apart from the obvious role of promoting their gear, some of the more established exhibitors seem to use IFSEC to try out a few ideas/concepts and see what response they get - which I think is why they seem to be vague about release dates - so I took the opportunity to let (Gardtec in my case) know what I would like them to be making.Elmdene were a waste of time. I was interested in the graded stuff so made the effect to find their stand. For a manufacturer of contacts etc to not even have a sample to give, very poor. they seem to follow the video games parradox, ie. socom 3 (PS2) finally out almost six months after original release date, yet out in the states for months. grrrrr! regs alan If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!
