you still get about on a horse?

I think I said tat wrong, all I meant was it has become so complex, it may put some people off wanting an alarm, or they may find it too complicated, compare an Optima XM to the Vanderbilt SPC alarm, surely the XM is easier to use, programme and may even be more reliable, with the only thing to go wrong a battery charging resistor

lol look at it properly, its the only rf I rate

castle used to be high end, then it bought by Pyronix. Can anyone ever say they rated a Pyronix product as best?

With all of these alarms and their new features, that can contact you and do all sorts of other things, like home automation, do you not think the true meaning of a home alarm system has been forgotten? It is nice to have all of these new features, however, it can be very complicated, and may even be less reliable.

i wouldn't have any of that. Nice bell but that's all

ideal panel vanderbilt spc, ideal sensor Optex, ideal bell car, ideal contact elmdene

used to be on eBay but easy to find one, usually sold to protect cheating wives/husbands to stop the gps trackers reporting

The panel looks like a Response Mi-Guard ;)

I didn't even know that the panel existed, looks strange. I'll bet its expensive. I always thought the Castle panels were high end. Maybe a Galaxy for my home, although, it seems to Commercial. Worst bell box would be an ADE Reson8, I hate the look of them, and the fact no effort has been made to make it the slightest bit water proof!

Birmingham and Manchester tend to show the trend. I'm seeing breakins just staying upstairs again. last time was 10 years ago. I'm also seeing gsm jammers and line cuts. New version of the old stuff and cut

Where do people get the 'Jammers' from? Suerly, they must have to make them themselves

Wow, never seen one of hem before, the keypad has an Aritech look to it :) I think I would have some sort of Castle Care Tech panel, with flush mounted keypads. An Elmdene Rapier, and Guardall Dual-Tech PIRs :)

    I don't.

I do agree tho, generally people would have a new car or phone every three years, many haven't had there alarm looked at in that time never mind upgrade/repairs etc.

I don't even know anyone who uses their alarm anymore. How many new alarms do you install a week?

Yes just like the Lada Niva is regarded as the best Lada....

Ha, Lada is an ancient car, probably the Accenta equivalent of the car world

I like em there are loads of original optima, xm, xl etc still in service for over 20 years. when you see an optima in service its usually the oldest electrical device in the place!

The Optima XMs also appear to be pretty waterproof, I got one from a house that had been flooded, the grey facia was starting to peel off, but some glue and it was back, as good as new.

for a cheap panel its fine. Granted no one drives a lada but as we know few class their home security as more important than their smartphone choice

id also bet that every home has a more expensive tv than the control panel that protects it

Yeah, what sort of panel protects your home?

Did you know the G4 "is a Grade 4 alarm"... I didn't know either, apparently a sparkie told a customer it was....... So must be true!!

Hence to say we didn't get that job with our (only) grade 2 Enforcer quote!

Ha, well, I guess who is the customer to question, is the Accenta a Grade 2 alarm? I can see why the customer believed him, because the panel says G4 on the front, of course it is Generation 4 Software it's running, like its predecessor, the G3

we sell boatloads of em can't see it being discontinued

Yeah, I would like one, but for some reason, some idiot decided to change the buttons from words to symbols! Looks stupid if you ask me. I wonder why they did that?

  10. 8 minutes ago, datadiffusion said:

I would be amazed if they even had staff left that ever worked on that product line, I could be totally wrong but would be surprised if they even owned the development equipment to make even minor changes to the G4 code either.

Didn't they make the G4, though? Surely they would still have the code. Was it Novar that made the G3? I would have thought after 11 years, it would be time for a new one. The G3 only lasted about 4 years.

The numerical keypad itself, all the digits seem to remain in the ON condition, I would have thought they go out after a short period of inactivity

They are always on at full brightness. I thought it strange at first, but it doesn't really matter. I have an older style LCD Accenta keypad and they go out until you press a key.

From the photo I can even tell you that standing on the street looking from the front of your home you live in the right hand house of two 1960's semi's, used to shop in Sainsbury's and are due a rewire.

Most engineers would see that as a benefit

Hmmmm, you were close. But the house is 30s. Yes, probably due a re-wire, and no, Morrisons, always ;)

On the plus side, when id does ignite when you're in bed it's under the dry wooden stairs to freedom so you'll all die together.

Ha, how did you know it is under the stairs? :D All dying together because of the Paragon, has anyone ever come across a panel which has caught fire?

It's probably the original battery that's baking your power supply making it really hot. There may well be a voltage in the battery but chances are it's holding little to no Ah capacity. If it's that old it's probably broken or breaking down and pulling the life out of the power supply, hungry for the charge... but can't as it's goosed.

Well, last time we had a power cut, it lasted for the full two hours. 4 PIRs, and an SAB.

    heat = energy

a cheapo battery might save enough pennies to pay for itself,

or do an MTA & **** if off the wall whilst your mate films it for youtube ?

Ha, I've seen those MTA Systems videos on YouTube, funny.I didn't realise the Paragon was such a hated panel.

Surely there is your indication there is a potential problem. You must be mad if you ignore this... Rip it out and bin it

I would do, but my parents would never let me do that, they never even use the thing. They don't care, that is why the battery is still the original to the panel too. It'll take a fire or something terrible like that to make them change it.

  15. 10 hours ago, PSE said:

I hate Paragons, Some of our old customers love them to bits.  You're mad if you think its a good panel

Still got about 70 of these on service, Mixture of Plus and Super 2, Also got 6 of the tiny Conqueror panels and a handful of Sterling 10

As for saying its working fine, I will almost guarantee the power supply has gone high on it, battery will be charging at around 14v or more

Funny you should say that, the transformer in ours was burning hot! I was shocked, it was really hot! I must be mad, since I quite like it in a way, but wish something easier to use like an Optima was in there.

Round about the time that ADI was still called 'Gardiner' and being about 20 or so, I asked if they had any old Scanny demo boards

I could have; they said no but I could help myself to a Pyronix one that had decent screenprinted 'simulate tamper' buttons and everything on.

I turned it into a Scanny demo board soon enough, already mounted was a Paragon or whatever just like the pic above (there was another panel

which I assume was the 'working' one but it had been removed). The PCB had been pinched, but the membrane glued back.

It spend the next 10 years in my parents neighbours shed with a solar powered LED to light the keys up through the window ;)

I say ten years, it could still be there now for all I know.

You should go and get it, I'd buy the Paragon from you, great little panels, they have a job to do, and they do it well.

    Just very 'unfriendly' imo

Fair enough. When I was younger I hated the interruption tone it made. Sounds like a buzzing... thing!

My brother in law had one of these, I fitted it second hand from my house in 1994 and up until he moved last year it was still in daily use.

    fecking horrible things.

May be horrible, which they are. Nasty sounds they make, and very hard to program, but they work, as you say. What don't you like about them?

Love some of these replies. For anyone interested, or Paragon plus with the cover removed for the first time in 24 years. Original battery there, still works somehow. Can anyone tell what terminals are linked out?
