Considering there is a shortage of eng's in the industry, If this lad is worth his keep I'd be doing as much as I could to keep him.

A lot of apprentices I come across lack motivation or don't quite get the jist of things.

If he has these rare qualities he's got to be worth a decent pay packet.

As was mentioned above, you'll have to start again from square one molding a new lad to the way your company runs things if you lost him.

B) Boy I can tell that I was on penuts when I worked for my last employer. I was on a basic plus overtime and never made above £17k max in a year. the only way I could have made more was if I killed my off my boss.

I was doing everything from install to service, major faults, CCTV, Fire alarms and site surveys for new installations.

If I was paid more (a lot more) I would never have left and started up on my own.

They now have an ex TV eng trying to do my old job.
