You do vpn access by dialling from the remote site into either the clients network or into your own network setup and the viewer also dials this. Then in effect they are both local

 

100% right - I'm not the man who actually configures the routers, but in essence a connection is generated from the mobile client back to the known fixed IP central server, and that server allocates an IP from its pool back to that VPN client. From then on you have a persistant IP connection  -at least until something fails, so in general you would have a script on the VPN client end that pings a 'known good' and reboots after x failures in y minutes. This is essentially the same tech used in bonded ADSL services to give faster up/download.

the known fixed ip central server - would be where youd put the camera ...

 

but if you are using a 3g sim card ( pre paid with no public nattable ip) ... then you cant make it the server ,( cos you dont have any public ip for the client to point to) - you certnainly cant put the camera on it  and expect anyone 2 be able to connect to it...

 

 

 

but a client does not need a static ip  , or even a nattable public ip - so youd  put the client  on the 3g side instead.

 

 

if the remote location  where u want to place the cctv camera has no internet - and you can only use 3g  then  you are presented with a problem...

remote side is where you want to base the camera - but if this is where the client is - how do you "stream" ?

 

 

clients work great on any 3g - can surf the net no problem,,,

 

 

but from server side -or any other local ip - how do you connect to the ip camera which might be plugged into a router running the client?

 

is there a way of configuring routers which are setup to act as a vpn client - to "present"  the camera which may be plugged into one of its lan ports?

 

 

 ,,, the vpn server allocates the router running a vpn client an ip address - it does not allocate an ip address to the ip camera plugged into the router with the vpn client.

 

 

if the router with the vpn client allocates an  ip addrerss to the camera plugged into one of its lan ports - how do you access this locally allocated ip from the server side ?

Does anyone on here have any kind of standard data sim (not fixed IP) running in a 3g router with DDNS?
