Why would it get worse - surely the problem is in part due to my small (7.2Ah) battery not holding up under the steady state load?

I think this is getting more confusing than hepful as guess work is being applied.

Back to basics and 1st things 1st :

Wrong/failed back up batteries are responsible for a high % of system problems going by the posts on this forum.

Fit a new one with the correct Ah and get back to us if the problem stil persists after 24hrs of installation of the new barrery.

also im guessing your 'testing' your battery with a volt meter.

That will prove very little. Id say that probably the battery is failing.
