Scantronic stuff is bulletproof for this job, most community phone system alarms use the scanny button for this reason.

I second that Scantronic is the dogs b******s for remote PA. Very robust and reliable but not the cheapest.

Yes, we've had a good half mile response in built up areas (eg building sites, nursing homes, dockside warehouses), even got them working in steel containers (not half mile though).
