I've just had a quote to install an alarm system - infact, 4 quotes.

The house is being stripped out and all floor boards etc are up so it's minimal labour.

The quotes I'm getting are in excess of

You could but i doubt any approved alarm company would take on a DIY system even if it did comply with the regs for police response.

If all the quotes are coming in around the same price it may suggest its the right price.
If I install the alarm, could an alarm company verify the install as/when I needed police response etc?

chances are when you ring up the "approved" alarm company & say you want them to take your DIY job they'll not be interested?
