My mum can claim the insurance,

So get it done properly all paid for by the insurers. She'll probably end up with a nice new alarm and proper cover for a year for the price of the insurance excess (which will have to be paid anyway).

Not worth trying to do anything else. Insurers get very suspicious of people trying to make money on claims, so don't do anything that might be seen as that or they'll get very difficult indeed.
