  1. Oh right, wasn't really looking for engineer manual, I assume these would of come with user manuals for the average joe?

TBH there wasn't much of a manual at all from new. Just a small A5 piece of card folded into thirds IIRC.

They are very menu driven, so not to hard to scroll about the user menu; from what I remember.

  2. The door contacts are by 'CQR SC570/WH/MULTI/G2 or G3', my bad, sorry.

They have 3 terminals in them, 2 for 12v + - and one spare, it also says to cut one of the links to make it a tamper so I've done that on all of them...not sure if I should have done that.

Hmm, you seem a bit out of your depth here...

    Some quick pointers...

    Door contacts don't have power.

CQR Multi has links that you cut for different values. I assume Scantronic are still using 4K7 alarm, 2K2 tamper.

The Optex Savers are good PIR's, although they do not have EOL resistors built in; so you will need the resistors supplied. Please refer to the manual on how to install the resistors in the sensors.

When you say 4 pair I assume you mean 8 core alarm cable?

You need to find out the total system current, I know Optex Saver's are 11mA max so that's a start.

  3. As I see it, and please correct me if I am wrong, but the following analogy applies:

    • When you go into a electronics store to buy a new DVD player, you don't have to be an expert in the latest technology, in fact which technology suits your personal needs the most (be it cost/image quality/sound etc etc), to be able to go home and connect the system up and for it to run without any problems
I see the above being relevant to my requirement.  I am competent to connect a system up, whether it be plug and play or requires some form of setup, but my knowledge of the individual components is lacking.

With respect, do you not see how you are making talented engineers/technicans and CCTV companies, sound like chimps that plug things together. You wonder why you have ruffled a few feathers.

There is a lot more to installing a CCTV system then buying consumer products (DVD players) that are designed to be foolproof on installation.

In a professional installation every system is bespoke, designed to get exactly what the customer needs. There are so many variables and choosing the wrong parts could lead to a seemingly working system. However, the evidence maybe not fit for purpose.

The community is very helpful, but they can't teach you there whole job overnight (this could be 3-5 years apprenticeship and xyz years experience).

IP Camera - Whats reasonable without going over the top and ultra HD etc?

How longs a piece of string, this is the important part.

You need a good quality camera to get good images.

If you need identification we are talking megapixels, however, we don't know the viewing angle, field of view, distance of it's location.

    - DVR/NVR - Which is better?

They are sort of the same thing. DVR is normally used to describe analogue systems and NVR for IP.

    Both normally have Ethernet connections.

Both store on to hard drive and you can control the recording rate to last xyz days.

The larger the HDD the more you can store before overwriting it.

    - Cabling - You mention cat5/6 - benefit of this rating?

Cat 5e and Cat 6 are standards of network cable.

    - Camera psu - What is this for?

May not be required if using a PoE switch, see below

    - hdmi / dvi monitor - Assume this is for live viewing.  Im not actually too concerned with this feature, unless it is actually a requirement for any system to function correctly?  As long as I can play back through PC at a later stage that is fine

Not necessarily needed. Depends on the site.

    - Network switch - What is this for?

To connect up an IP system you will need some IT networking skills.

  4. I have read about an engineers code, which I don't believe I have, so I will call the installation company for it if it is necessary.

Pointless doing anything without the engineers code, which they won't give to you as this puts there other customers at risk.

The panel also while it's a bit untidy, looks full so no room for additions.

Your better talking to your current maintainer.

  5. I do that all the time its because you have in your mind what you are going to say when the phone is answered, You know who you are calling and you are checking that this is who you have. I never let plums that answer "this is Matthew " change me from asking if they are Matthew

Exactly, I explained this to someone the other day.

I always answer the phone with "4291"

I always answer with "Greater Manchester Police, Fraud Dept."

  6. Have you fitted any of these before, can I like them into any alarm panel?

Yes, yes with the right kit

ok so its a Visonic Tower 20-AM.

    Yes

    MCR-308+RL Receiver

    Yes

Sounds like your making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I agree with Norm what's wrong with the Powermax? Assuming it's ok for the risk of the property? (only one way detection)

If I wanted something better I'd rip it all out and use Texecom and Rick O' Shea.
