  1. Share your secret of being able to let go and wind down :)

Every minute I'm awake I've got business on the brain and I'd really love to know the secret of doing nothing but relax and enjoy family time. Do you switch mobile off?

No mobile is on and have web access, but calls not to me so it's very very rare I get a call. Since being told I had very high blood pressure etc a couple of years ago due to stressing over that kind of stuff I had a big change and thought feck it.

It can wait until tomorrow / Monday etc, I now wind down at weekends if I am not on call and try not to think of work until Monday morning, and i get to spend quality time with my family.

  2. I came to that conclusion a couple of years ago remortgaged the house and bought a holiday home and have since spent every weekend when not on call away with my wife and kids. One of the best things I ever did.

  3. QFA muppets are only getting the crappy jobs nowadays.

Best way to go it alone is to subcontract. If you have some cash behind you you could look around for a small co to buy. Its not as simple as it seems I came from engineer engineering manager and then operations manager, I thought I was running the business as an operations manager. But little did I know, it was a big learning curve when I purchased my own business, with as Andrew says lots of 80 hour weeks, and lots of nightmares along the way. If I could start all over again I would think long and hard and then go get a job in Spain hiring deck chairs and getting laid every night by a different girl

Now your talking Pete, where do I sign up ?

  4. I started on my own 8 yeas ago with nothing. If your going to make a go of it get ready for years of 80 + hour weeks.

Tbh it's getting harder as the other muppets are working for peanuts these days.

  5. i'd be a bit carefull with 8 core, it is easy to stick a leg through it and cause issues, 6 core tends to be fine. Stapling around skirting, architrave and coving i find tends to be a lot neater and lest intrusive than trunking. Just run a bit of decorators chalk across the cable to blend it into ceiling/walls. Magnolia chalk is heaven sent :)

But surly under 2m it should be mechanically protected?

  6. Tbh, I have no reason to go for NSI. We very rarely lose a job through not being NSI

As a company we are here to make a profit and as much of it as we can, saying that we don't cut corners. Since getting in the SSAIB club in 2006 we have 1 non conformity that was for a 13 amp fuse in a spur that a sparky fitted, we requested a 3 amp fuse on the spec and it was not checked on commissioning the system.

SSAIB allows us to win 95% of the jobs we quote apart from the large tenders we have been offered that state NSI gold only. But to be fair I don't want that kind of work any way.

    So what's the point ?

  7. I hate RSD contacts they fail far to often for my liking.

We have started fitting 2 x Guardall DT 15+ at each side of the shutter (with the mask connected as we only fit G3 Galaxy on monitored jobs)

Our Fa rate is very low and we dont get stupid callouts to rotten RSD contacts.

Even if the job is G2 we connect the mask on 99.9% of the detectors.

  8. Well i thaught i would report back after almost 6 years....

We now have 8 members of staff offices 5 vans/cars on the road and more work than we can cope with and i am stressed out.

But on the whole things have gone very well for us but my god it has been a 24/7 job to get here and cost me a few health problems due to being over worked :)

The problem now is keeping on top of all the audits and paper work etc, and we are owed a fortune :(

Thats ths way it is LOL..

If you are thinking of leaving a full time job to start up on your own and intend to make it work get ready for a lot of very hard work and if like me its going to be 12/15 hour days for years... :)(

  9. LOL

I am more stressed than ever with over £70k out standing at any one point.. We have more work on than ever, 7 members of staff and looking at a new engineer in the new year.

Trust me dont think its an easy ride cos its not... Thinking back 9 - 5 at Hex was a dream.. but did not get the ££ i needed.

I have had shinges this last few weeks due to stress.

So dont think its an easy ride, its NOT.....

But on the plus side we are picking up loads of installs and most important loads of 3 year contracts :)

  10. I have had many signal issues in town centre's. Saying that the one we fitted today in a metal clad building had a signal of 8.2

Not to keen on the new antena the small black one. If fitted on a galaxy you have to cut a 20mm hole in the top of the panel, if you try to use the knock outs provided you would not get the panel lid on or off.
