RS422 and wigand cable specification

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Our access control equipment specific using

i) Belden #9512 22AWG, 4 core, from the the controller to the reader

ii) Belden #9830 24AWG, 3 twisted pair, shielded, for the RS422 connection to the computer

However those specific cables are not commonly available (could not find them in Gardiner).

Most of our engineer recommend using normal screened twisted pair cable from Gardiner(24AWG) for both connections (RS422 and wiegand). We have tested and it worked fine, but I just want to double check to see they will work well for us in the long run. Most of our cable runs are less than 100m. Do they have to be screened.

Please let me know if you have some weird experience when you have chosen a slightly wrong spec cable for your access control job.

Many thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Edward

What make of equipment are you using?

The opinions I express are mine and are usually correct!

(Except when I'm wrong)(which I'm not)

Make sure you use the right cable for the readers if they are 26bit weigang data.

As Breff said depends on the equipment you are using .

On the bench the readers would probably work ok with 8 core .However out on site things could be different .

In my experience if the manafacturer is saying screened cable,it`s probably best to follow their advice .

Nothing worse than a system giving you problems ,you get the manafacturer on site and they politely point out you haven`t followed their specs for cable.

As I`m new to the forums I`m not 100% sure if its ok to post names of cable retailers in the public forums .If a mod says it`s ok .I`ll post the website address of a company who would be able to help you .

cheers

Neil

Use the right cable !

I ran a 12 core screened alarm cable about 10 meters to extend an existing cable run to a paxton prox reader on a net2 system. It didn't work until I replaced the cable with the correct type.

Should have known really but the 12 core was the closest type of cable I had with me and 10 meters seemed worth a try......

:hmm:

I install HID readers with Andover Controls controllers-distance up 130m.

Cable twisted pair 4x2x0,35mm or 4x2x0,5mm.

Voltage 12V DC not 5V with controller.

All ground power supply conect.

Works many year.
