Withheld Numbers.

Featured Replies

Learned an interesting thing today, all calls regardless of how you with hold or mask the identity of the originating number, are logged by the service provider. If the originating number is routed through several different service providers, it will be logged several times.

This in effect means that it is impossible to hide a telephone call on a network anymore.

I think technology is really starting to help the :police: and more often than not it becomes just as effective crime reduction measure as good old fashioned policing.

Yea this has been around since CLI and modern exhanges. Eiven those that witheld there number is still visable to the system. Out of intrest I know in Liverpool they are trialing a new security measure to reduce hoax calls to 999 operators as this part of the country has a very high rate of Hoaxers to the emergency services

I use an international calling company who uses CLI to recognise my telephone number, and links it to my account. They know who I am even if I withhold my number.

There are 2 types of number presentation - Network and Presentation number.

Even if you withold the Presentation number/CLI, Network CLI is still passed through with a flag message imposed saying Restrict.

Ocasionally Carriers do get it wrong with Network CLI but they normally soon get told as it is illegal to use a non-designated or to restrict Network CLI.

Network CLI is non-touchable to the user.

Its quite interesting isnt it, because taking a bit of a side line, ip addresses are logged on servers or forums like this so tracing people on the internet can be quite interesting also.

Im all for banning and tracing hoax calls on a serious note, and the police should be involved for all kinds of hoaxing be it here on this forum or on the phone :)
