The original Optima Compact has 6 pre-programmed zones , ( an XM6 with chimes).

The manual says '6 zones plus PA and Tamper'

btw I did a factory reset from engineer mode (via the SET key) - now the alarm arms itself but it still won't let me set up the zones. If it defaults to Program 1 then I might be ok ;)

Using the user manual , try to set the second user code , if it wont let you , I would suspect you have the older , non programmable panel.
