It's the older single section master socket and the modem I'm having trouble with connects to it.

If you don't know......ask.

Technically, it's a call to BT at this point, you could try disconnecting the extension wiring at this point, and also try another modem on the line. Other than trying different bits in different ways there's not much else you can do.
