My kids are 10 and 12 - Not massively street wise but also clued up enough to know what to avoid and what to tell us about.

We live in what is officially a village but is pretty close to a city.  We let the kids go to the park together or my lad can go by himself being a bit older.

I still walk my daughter to and from school but my son makes his own way to the school which is a bit further out.  He has a good crowd of friends which makes a huge difference.

They are both good kids with good values and echoing what others said above it is important that parents take responsibility for teaching our kids that, I know I do.
