System Recommendations For A School

Hi Can anyone help advise me on some hardware and spec for a system for a school....

I've attached an image with a rough layout or what is required. They don't have a lot of money to spend but they have some. At a guess i'm think a system like this with labour would be about 5K (including a weeks labour), or am I way off the mark?

I'm interested in plain BNC cameras or IP cameras as I think they could be easier to install. Comments opinions welcome on that point too.

The plan is to have the DVR in the office so all cameras would need to link back to that location.

The care taker would like to view the cameras remotely, he lives in a house next to the site. So he could use his broadband connection pr some sort of transmitter/receiver, the apex of his roof nearly has line of site to the office where the DVR would be situated.

I think the longest cable run will be about 55M.

Camera 7 is on the gate so they can buzz poeple in an out but Im not suire how to get the picture back from there as there are no ways of running a cable without digging up the tar mac. Maybe wireless or some kind of Video over Mains device.

Anyway, I open the floor to debate with the attached picture/diagram.

I would say more like 20k. Be careful I've worked on buildings like that before.

You are way out with your costing of 5K IMO and I can't help wondering that if you are struggling at the spec stage, is this really something that you should be wanting to do yourself.

My thoughts exactly......

You also need to be asking the following questions:

  • Does the school require local authority approval?
Monitoring - Most local authorities now insisted on this!
    Are you CHAS accredited?
Are you on the local Authoriy list of approved suppliers?
What is the school hoping to achieve with the system, i.e. (school scenario) Crime Prevention, Liability, Bullying, Truancies detection etc

if your using decent equipment 5k wont last long.

IMO as a rough budget id say 1k per camera, then add whatever you need at control end. Decent dvr's are well over 1k, yes you can get cheap ones, but you can get cheap everything.

Think about what your trying to achieve, then look at equipment that fits that bill. Never start of with a number of cams and a budget as you will end up with a very very poor system, that will have to ripped out a proper one installed. Be careful

Assuming the school requiries authority approval for cctv, you'll need to apply to be on the list of approved contractors

You'll probably also find that if approval is necessary, the system will have to go out to tender depending on the price.
