Hi,

I've just registered as I've been looking for an intruder alarm (following break-in and theft of car-keys and car..!).

As an IT guy I'm always telling people not to wait until they have had a PC crash before they do a backup - seems I should have taken the same approach and fitted an alarm before I got broken into...

Anyway, I'll be asking a few questions about what to fit and if it's a DIY or Professional install I should be looking at.

cheers

Simon

Morning Simon & welcome,

Sorry to hear about the break-in & car, there is a lot of scum out there at the moment that like to take the easy route to money.

As you can see from the number of posts I've made I'm fairly new round here as well, the natives seem a friendly bunch. There are some however that are a little biased & at every opportunity will tell you to stop messing about & pay a professional to do the work. Their ethos would be if they had a IT related fault they would pay you to repair it, however I don't think that's the case.

[Alan,

It's always a trade off between the DIY and pro approach.

Part of my equation is that I actually like doing the tech work myself, but always try and balance that with the fact that most of time I'm doing the work for the first time and there is a learning curve which might cost time (which mine is free) and re-working (which might cost more in the long run).

I guess in this case it's a matter of having a certified install if I wanted to try for a reduction in my insurance premiums (although I wasnt really thinking of going that route).

Lets see what the forum members say.

cheers

Don't you think your comments regarding bias and professionalism are a little disingenuous?

There are several reasons many of us here suggest use of a professional, expert installer over a DIY approach. However, we almost always do this on a balance of factors, and not just because it is the only living most of us "professionals" here actually have.

For example, DIY systems generally do not have the range of features, or the quality or reliability of build that an application may require. In other cases, it may be clear (to a professional) from the nature of the poster's comments, that taking the DIY route may well end up either compromising the poster's security, or indeed, simly cost them far more than if they had simply called someone to do the job for them.

As an industry forum, it is particularly enciente of you to expect that the purpose here is simply to educate everyone who asks in all aspects of our trade - though, often we do. Would you prefer, perhaps, that we advised people to put themselves at risk, to further only the aims of the DIY manufacturers, and the egos of an undoubted few who feel what we do is "money for old rope"?

I recall, from years ago, an anecdote which illustrates this point well. I carried out a quote for an electrical installation - house rewire, and was harried all the way round by the householder, telling me "he could do it himself, there was nothng to it - he just didn't have time"......so, my quote arrived, he called, said was way too high - well, I knew it wasn't as I knew the other two parties quoting, and they both quoted themselves out of the job, precisely because of the house holder's attitude.

I refused to lower my price, much as I needed the work. He asked me to supply only, which I also refused, pointing him in the direction of the local electrical shed, piled high with Saturday specials.

I opened the local paper some two weeks after this, to be presented with a news article and pictures of a half burnt out house I had quoted, together with the report that the householder had also badly electrocuted himself in the process.

The moral is, some things look easier than they really are.

And likewise - IT is also a specialist field - and many of us using IT as a central part of our business could not afford to run without support from people who know what they are doing.

We are, on the whole, a friendly bunch, but we don't like being maligned needlessly, or unfairly. Perhaps a few more months here would qualifiy you better to judge both why we (trade people) respond as we do, and what some of us are like.

Bill.

Hi Simon - welcome, and sorry to hear your news.

Whether you take DIy or pro route depends on many things. Best advice is to ask your questions, see where it takes you, and go from there.

One thing I will say, you should be in a far more informed position about your choices afterward, than now.

Thanks Bill,

After 23 yrs of no alarm, whatever I do has got to be an improvement..;-)

I'm intrigued by the definition of DIY alarms, as I see that the PowerMax range seems to be installed by DIY'ers and Pro's alike, so I assume the kit is the same (except for the PowerMax Plus v PowerMax Pro differences that I asked about).

If by DIY kit people are referring to a B&Q type system, then yes I assume these are not of the same quality as PowerMax etc, or am I mistaken that PowerMax is what (some) of the Pro's on this site recommend..?

Thanks again for the help, all inout welcome.

cheers

simon
