Installing Door Contacts

Featured Replies

installing a texecom r8 at the sisters house, and came across the sliding patio doors which are plastic coated steel or aluminimum

how would you fix the contact to the doors and frame, using a very fine drill bit and screw them direct or silicon them to the frame?

any help appreciated,

colin

There is a bit of a grey area here, if screwing into the frame invalidates the warranty of the door/patio then finding another way of fixing the contacts is needed and I've found that most adhesives don't seem to work for very long.

Drill a 2/3mm pilot hole with an HSS drill bit...drill it slowly applying little pressure, or you'll snap the bit. Then use self tapping screws with a thread of 1mm larger than the holes you have drilled. 15mm in length at least.Plastic contacts on Ali Doors and Frames is never a good idea as it can interfere with the pull of the magnet and create high resistance within the cct ,causing a failure to operate properly. As its pvc coated you will not have to worry bout that.......Wickes/BQ door no doubt. As for silicone...No No No.

just drill the //.B.W.F.//ing thing you big wuss

Just drill and screw it. My father in laws best friend runs a window manufacturing business and I mentioned it to him about this and he laughed at me.

If you're going to drill then use a heavy duty plastic door contact, the magnet is so strong you could fit a small planetoid between the gap before it breaks. 24kj3.gif

I usually just ask the smart arsed window fitter "hows the handle / hinge / letter box fitted then....." when he says drilling invalidates the warranty

never lost one yet

ok thanks dazzler for that much appreciated.

strewth Colin - the door will have broken before the ALUMUNIUM ( non magnetic material used to fabricate doors and windows) manages to affect the "magnetic "magnet

now if your sister lives in the rough part of town and has a STEEL door ...........
