I have a very simple alarm system with one movement detector inside the front door. During the summer the builder unplugged the main box and the battery ran down and the system went dead. When the electrician reconnected it it seemed to reset and work fine, but then he unconnected it and reconnected it again and it is now asking me to call the alarm company.

I would start from scratch and get a few quotes in to install a proper alarm system. This unit you say was plugged in...... :no:

Yes it was plugged into a mains plug socket in the wall. I think you might be right though. Might be start again time. Would like to install something simple myself.

I f you go for a new system i would go for a gardtec set-up.
