I belive it starts from day 1.

Ours do, minimum 4 weeks per annum under current employment laws and doesn't matter if temp, probation, or permenant.

If your not a member the FSB is great for free advice on that sort of thing www.fsb.org.uk

Depends when you say it starts, you are the boss.

Our engineers are employed for the first three months on a probationary period. During this time we get to see if we like them and they get to see if they like us. Either party can end the employment with no notice during this period. We also carry out all their security checks and disclosures.

If we have issues with them we can write to them on the eve of the 3 months and extend their probation for a further three months.

Once the probationary period ends, we give them a written contract of employment which gives details of holiday entitlement and sick pay.

When you employed them, did you give them an offer letter? We normally include this information in an offer letter.

Hope you get on OK. We have had a right mare with trainees. We must have gone through about 6 as they didn't like getting out of bed or were totaly useless.

We changed tact and now try to employ older people who have already done a trade but want a change.

Regards

Dave

Full employment benefits start on the 1st day, including sickness benefits, Holidays and Bank hols. (sickness depends what your contract says), We have just had an engineer off 6 months sick, he came back then booked 4 weeks holiday, taking the p*** or what?

Just trying to do my job

Not at all, he has accrued his leave and is still entitled to them, do you pay engineers whilst they are on sick leave?

Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

Hopefully your employment contract is as such that you don't pay him full pay for the 6 months, that could crucify a business. We pay full pay but only after three days sickness, this elimnates the sickies. We also only pay up to so many weeks depending on length of service.

You are entitled to refuse his holiday request or request he takes the leave in several hits, not all at once. I'm guessing your holiday year is about to run out? If this is the case you could allow him to carry holiday over to the next year. If this is also the end to the financial year be sure to tell your accountant to accrue it.
