Cctv Dome Bleaching By Rainx?

Hi Guys,

We have nearly 400 dome cameras and recently we have noticed that parts of the dome are 'bleaching' into a orange tint, it is not noticeable during the day but at night when the IR kicks in reflects off it almost blinds the camera. The part of the dome that is bleaching the most is the part that faces the sun the most, we have spoken to the manufacturer and they have said that using RainX to clean the domes has potentially caused this.

Whats everyone's thoughts on this? and has anyone experienced this before?

We have discussed this before IIRC.
RainX is not designed for plastic surfaces.

  • Avoid using Rain‑X® Rain Repellent on plastic shower doors, glass shower doors with etching or frosting, plexiglass and fiber glass
  • Avoid using Rain‑X® Rain Repellent on any plastic surfaces, including motorcycle windshields, ATVs and solar panels

Hi there,

How long have the domes been installed for? As depending on the material that the bubble is made from (pollycarb , Acrylic etc.) natural UV from the sun can colour the bubbles after a period of time, however i would admit that the one in the image is very badly effected as would expect only expect that level if exposed for a very long amount of time. Also other than the Rain-X have these domes been cleaned with anything else, solvents etc.? as this can alss cause issues like you are getting. Finaly apart from the discolouration are the domes in good shape? or are the covered in scratches (even hairline ones)? as this can cause IR Blowback like you are getting in the low light images as the IR refracts back off of the cratches instead of passing through.

Regarding Rain-X, i agree with the above, however i have used it before on pollycarb domes in very exposed areas and not had any adverse effects.

Hope this helps,

cheers,
