Thanks again guys - I think I see clearly what I ned to do.

 

And Antinode - yes wireless was my first choice as I have done one of those in a small cottage.  However, this is a ground floor flat - with several rooms spread along a corridor.  Without finalising a plan, I thought I would need about a dozen sensors and when I priced those up, it was very expensive.
