BS 4737

Hello

I was just wondering what the correct colours are when wiring up a PIR according to BS4737?

I am using Red for +

Black for -

Blue and White for alarm

and green and yellow for tamper

Also blue and White for EOL

Is this BS4737 SSAIB/NSI OK

as far as i am aware it doesn`t matter... i have worked for various companies and all used different.

I dont do much with intruder systems but am sure that 1 of the other members will correct me if i am wrong

I would have thought that coulour combinations don't really matter.

A scenario I had a few years ago was the installation of 40 domestic alarms on a council plot of houses for society's drop outs. To install all alarms in the same colour code could create a situation where some not so honest person living on this site could dissassemble his alarm, note the colour code and possibly 'interfere' with other alarms on the site.

If all colours were standard throughout the site, maybe he could find a way to disable a neighbors system. Of course, if the alarms are fitted correctly, there should be no problem but you cannot always allow for the good nature of neighbours letting others look after their kids whilst they are out or maybe even to look after the house whilst they are holidaying. Sometimes these sites have completed houses at one end that now have residents, whilst other houses are still being built.

The dishonest chappy could strip the odd cable and short together alarm and tamper cores then invite a friend to 'do the house over' some time in the future. Using eol would stop this happening in the first place but at the very least, cable colours that change with each individual installation would make the systems that little more secure.

I'm sure on this point alone, BS4737 wouldn't cause a problem.

I think this is one area for security sake standardisation should never happen, burglars would like it though.

The opinions I express are mine and are usually correct!

(Except when I'm wrong)(which I'm not)

use what ever you want...

but its worst when some one joints a cable say under a floor and changes the colours round so when you come to upgrade etc you meter it out and you cant work out why red at the panel is blue and the detector.

rule no 1 on takeovers......Never rewire to your companies colours!!!!
