Engineer? From Hell.

I have just been to an old ladies house.

A tiny woman, 99 years old, deaf as a post and very poor eyesight.

I got the original call the other day to re-instate the system. A sparky colleague had done the initial silencing of the system after an apparent fault, and I have the job of fixing it.

Twaz a tamper fault on the old rusty steel bellbox.

Anyway, sorted it, and then had the job of explaining that everything was now ok. It seems the false alarm had really frightened her. I had to gently "shout" at her to tell her that everything was now ok and she should once again start using the system. But she kept pointing at an internal door and saying it won't shut.

I told her it didn't matter as the alarm would still be ok.

She repeated her concern about the door, and I then spotted that it had an old speed-fit contact fitted. However, my walk test, and the alarm documentation showed it was no longer connected. It must have been from an earlier alarm installation.

Again she pointed at the door, trying to tell me something. I really struggled to understand what she meant, and she then said "I'm such a nuisance to everyone" and started to cry.

I felt really bad.

I comforted her (not physically, you lot with the dirty minds!!!) and she soon calmed down.

She asked me about fixing the door (so it will shut) "so everything will be back to normal with the alarm".

So, guess who is now going to get their joinery skills put to the test!

I've never had a customer cry on me before (even when presented with the bill!). Quite an experience.

Anyway, she now seems more comfortable with everything, but I know that until the door is fixed, she won't be using the alarm, and a 99 year old on her own needs some form of protection.

Priority job me thinks.

Good on you mate. Regs: Andy@Amman Security. :P:P

Maybe mate, but I could not bring myself to charge them. They are not a rich family and I think they had been through enough aggro, and the Scumbag will get his just rewards the old fashioned way if the money is not paid back so no one loses really. Tell the truth you would probably have done the same yourself in the situation.
