Domestic Cctv Regs

Featured Replies

I am considering installing some day/night cameras after minor vandalism to two of my vehicles. Said vehicles were parked on the road alongside my back garden fence, so any cameras installed would by default be viewing outside my property and I am not certain how I stand on this legally.

Any information would be welcome...........

It doesnt matter with a domestic property providing you're not looking in neighbours windows etc

The opinions I express are mine and are usually correct!

(Except when I'm wrong)(which I'm not)

as long as theres signs and they only watch your cars no back gardens etc i should think that would be fine. i watch our vehicles on the inset space outside our property when we park there and thats a public part, alongside the footpath plus the camera has privacy sections blanked out so only certain parts are veiwable.

In law, no signs are required under DPA for domestic use.

hi

i quickly checked the information commissioners site to see if theres any info on this for you, and i found the following in there FAQ's:

Q: My neighbour has CCTV cameras overlooking my property. Is this in breach of the Data Protection Act?

If your neighbour is a private individual e.g. the cameras are on their residential property, it is unlikely that they will be breaching the Data Protection Act because there is an exemption for domestic/household processing of personal data as long as this does not involve putting personal information on a website or otherwise disclosing it to the world at large without good reason. They may however be breaching other legislation, such as the law about harassment or voyeurism, and so may be referred to another body such as the police to investigate.

if you want to browse through yourself to see if any other info relevant for you its here:

hope thats helpful

Thanks for all your help guys, now all I have to do is decide on the system & where to place the cameras! :hmm:

As Ilkie said, no signs are required.

If the only object of your targeted surveillance are your own vehicles, then it's highly unlikely that any other legislation would have any relevance at all.
